Paul Thomas Anderson almost cast screen legend Warren Beatty in a main role in the best movies of the '90s, powerfully led by a young Mark Wahlberg near the start of his career and then 61-year-old Burt Reynolds.
While Boogie Nights’ ensemble cast is considered one of the film’s strongest points, it almost looked very different. Several of the biggest roles were initially offered to other actors. Leonardo DiCaprio came extremely close to playing the lead part of Dirk Diggler, Samuel L. Jackson was offered the Buck Swope role that eventually went to Don Cheadle, and numerous stars were offered the part of adult film director Jack Horner, including Warren Beatty (via Far Out). There’s an interesting story as to why Beatty never played the part, however, and what happened when Reynolds did.
Warren Beatty Wanted To Play Dirk Diggler In Boogie Nights
During an appearance on the cast of Boogie Nights in the role of Jack Horner, the veteran adult film director who takes the 18-year-old Dirk Diggler under his wing after recognizing his star potential. Anderson explains that he got in touch with Beatty who, at 60 years old, was the perfect age to take on the role of Jack. Anderson pitched the star on Boogie Nights, and Beatty enthusiastically responded that he’d love to be in it.
It was only after two weeks of discussion on the project that Anderson realized Beatty wasn’t talking about the role of Jack Horner. The 60-year-old wanted to play the part of the 18-year-old adult film star Dirk Diggler. Anderson tried to explain the difficulties of the age difference, but Beatty was undeterred. When Anderson asked him if he’d consider playing Jack Horner, he turned it down. However, there’s no animosity between the two. Beatty would later say of Boogie Nights (via The Playlist), “I think it’s a very good movie. And PTA is a very, very good director.”
Why Burt Reynolds Is Perfect In Boogie Nights (Even Though He Hated It)
The role of Jack Horner in Boogie Nights famously went to Burt Reynolds. In the movie, Jack is a legend in the adult film industry, and it seems Paul Thomas Anderson wanted a real-life Hollywood legend to play him. With their long and illustrious careers, Burt Reynolds and Warren Beatty both fit the order perfectly. However, while Beatty often brings a lean and cynical streak to the roles he plays, Reynolds's kind eyes and warm demeanor bring a much-needed softness to the Jack Horner character. It’s this softness that distinguishes Reynolds’s Jack Horner as an empathetic and, in some ways, tragic creation, rather than the stereotypical exploitative adult filmmaker.
Nevertheless, Burt Reynolds’s best films, and his performance as Jack Horner even earned him an Oscar nomination.
