War is a messy business, and one Modern Warfare 2’s near-photorealistic Amsterdam level, and take part in a variety of missions loosely based on real-life events.

Players who pre-ordered Modern Warfare 2 have been able to try out the game’s story campaign early, and Steam has already recorded a peak concurrent player count of over 90,000 less than a week before its launch across all major platforms. Adding to this goodwill is the game's smaller file size in comparison to past entries, which finally addresses an issue many fans had with the last Modern Warfare game.

Reddit campaign protagonists of Modern Warfare 2's Shadow Company are charged with unlawful search and seizure, child kidnapping/reckless endangerment, unlawful detainment, and even unlawful torture of non-combatants during a raid on a Mexican village. A t team of Modern Warfare 2 's Task Force 141 and Mexican Spec-Ops are similarly indicted of public disturbance, illegal border crossing, and chemical warfare, with a total of crimes rounding up to nine. Modern Warfare 2's enemy leaders General Shepard and Hassan have also committed several illegal acts during the campaign, with the former charged with treason, desertion, and extortion, while the latter commits mass murder, smuggling, and theft of military assets.

Modern Warfare 2's Multiplayer Has Also Proven Controversial

The actions of in-game characters aren't the only controversy surrounding Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, as there are concerns that its crossplay will give PC players an unfair advantage in multiplayer matches due to the more precise movements a mouse and keyboard provide. There have been other issues with Modern Warfare 2’s revamped minimap and “Dead Silence” feature, which have likewise raised concerns over certain players getting an unfair edge.

Meanwhile, the single-player storylines in Call of Duty have always featured controversial moments and morally and legally questionable actions by characters the player controls, such as the infamous “No Russian” mission in the original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. It looks like the newer Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will continue this trend, as both protagonists and antagonists will break multiple laws throughout the shooter’s single-player campaign.
