Summary

  • A leaker claims that there are currently five Resident Evil games in development, including the next main title, Resident Evil 9.
  • In addition to new entries in the main series, potential games could include various remakes of older Resident Evil games.
  • A new installment in the Revelations spinoff series, or a multiplayer co-op game are also possible.

There may be a lot more RE Village's decisive ending and cryptic post-credits scene, one has to question what's coming next for the series.

That question may have just been answered by leaker Dusk Golem, whose comments were posted to Reddit by KekanKok. Dusk Golem claims to know of five Resident Evil games currently in development. While they say that one of these games is the next brand-new title in the series, Resident Evil 9, it's unknown what the other four might be. However, given the series’ history, Capcom's recent penchant for remakes, and the ever-churning rumor mill around it all, it's possible to make an educated guess.

What Resident Evil Games Are Next For Capcom?

Code Veronica, Resident Evil 5 Remake, & Revelations 3 Are All Possible

First and foremost, it's highly likely that Capcom is working on a wholly original Resident Evil 9. It's impossible to say just what it'll look like, but based on RE Village's epilogue, it's likely that Ethan Winters' daughter Rose will be taking over protagonist duties for the main series. Rose is implied to be working for the Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance, fighting bioweapons as every Resident Evil protagonist has done before. Where her journey will take her remains to be seen.

But with five Resident Evil games allegedly in development at once, there's no way all of them are part of the main series. If Capcom were to continue on its current trajectory, the next target for a remake would be 2005's Resident Evil 5. However, this is largely considered one of the series' weakest entries due to its unresponsive controls, focus on action gameplay over survival horror, and controversial depictions of Africa. While an RE5 remake could resolve these issues, there are certainly better options out there - for example, there's still no modern remake of the first Resident Evil.

Another prime choice for a remake would be Resident Evil - Code: Veronica. Released in 2000 as a Dreamcast exclusive, Code: Veronica is a spinoff from the main series, focusing on Claire and Chris Redfield as they try to break out of an island prison. It's long been considered a series standout due to its thrilling action sequences and chilling atmosphere. As a result, rumors of a Code: Veronica remake have been circulating for a while, and Dusk Golem's comments suggest it may be more than wishful thinking.

Besides remakes and new main entries, a new Resident Evil game could also come from its spinoff series. With the Nintendo DS title Resident Evil: Revelations and its sequel now available for modern platforms, the time is ripe for Revelations 3. It's also worth noting that Capcom has been trying to get a multiplayer Resident Evil game off the ground, most recently (and unsuccessfully) in the asymmetrical deathmatches of Re:Verse. A co-op Resident Evil in the style of Left 4 Dead would fill a niche, perhaps in a revival of the Resident Evil Outbreak spinoff series.

But for the time being, the future of Resident Evil remains a mystery. Dusk Golem has been right about many things, but not everything, and it's technically impossible to the rumors until Capcom makes an official announcement. And if five RE games truly are in development at once, it could be a long time until some of them see the light of day. But given the series' recent success, it's likely that something big is coming soon for Resident Evil.
