Horror legend Stephen King has voiced his for Mike Flanagan and his efforts to make a TV show based on King's book series TV series adaptation of The Dark Tower that is being developed by The Haunting of Hill House creator Mike Flanagan.
In a response to writer Jonathan Janz about Flanagan's The Dark Tower series, King asserts agreement that he would be the best filmmaker for the job. King's statement is yet another update about the ongoing project to bring Mid-World to the small screen.
Everything We Know About Mike Flanagan's Dark Tower Series
The Dark Tower series was previously adapted into a film in 2017 starring Idris Elba as Roland and Matthew McConaghey as The Man in Black. The film was critically panned, with much of its criticism coming from a lack of faithfulness to the source material. Flanagan's version already promises to be more accurate to the books, with horror writer-director sharing that his vision for The Dark Tower show's first shot would reflect the first book's opening line.
While The Dark Tower show is currently in development, details surrounding the series remain unclear. Flanagan envisions the show as having 5 seasons and 2 movies that are accurate to the original book series. Having signed an exclusive deal with Amazon in December 2022, it's likely, though unconfirmed, The Dark Tower series will wind up on Prime Video. Prime Video has previously shot a pilot for a prior Dark Tower series that was ultimately canceled. Flanagan also has yet to announce who will play Roland or his companions Jake, Eddie, and Susannah.
A TV adaptation of The Dark Tower may see new interpretations of some of King's other works. The Dark Tower sees characters from King's stories like The Stand, 'Salem's Lot, and Low Men in Yellow Coats play prominent roles in its story. With The Stand getting a recent adaptation, and another 'Salem's Lot on the way, it's unclear how those characters could be incorporated and where their live-action rights lie. With plenty of work ahead of him, Flanagan now clearly has King's seal of approval to make a new adaptation of The Dark Tower for the small screen.
