Rebecca Yarros' best-selling Onyx Storm theory in particular turns out to be true, it will have a major impact on the rest of the series.

Both of Yarros' best-selling books are a part of what is named The Empyrean Serieswith the overarching series title referring to the governing body of dragons in Navarre. While the book does touch on the politics of the dragons in some capacity, it has yet to really dive into why the series is named after them. One fan theory points out that Empyrean actually translates to the heavens or the sky—and the series title could have given away a major clue to Violet's greatest power ahead of Onyx Storm.

Violet's Ability To "Command The Sky" May Have A Deeper Meaning In The Empyrean Series

Yarros has kept the reason for naming the series after the Empyrean under wraps thus far, but with a bit of context from Fourth Wing and Iron Flame, the title might reveal more than originally thought. Violet has always been named by the venin as "the one who commands the sky", seemingly referring to her powerful lightning signet ability. But with the understanding that Empyrean itself means sky, it's highly possible that Yarros repeatedly uses this phrase as a means to foreshadow that Violet can command the dragons as well.

While readers are meant to believe that the venin want Violet for her powerful signet ability, it's likely that their true motives for her capture have to do with her influence over the dragons. It is already well known that Violet interacts with the dragons very differently than other riders, and she is often unafraid to speak to them directly. This is seen on multiple occasions with the dragons in Fourth Wing and Iron Flame—including during Violet's presentation walk before Threshing, and when she commands General Melgren's dragon, Codagh, to help fire the wards in Basgiath.

Yarros is known to build out important plot lines early in the series, even if they won't be discovered until much later in the books—like Xaden's second signet reveal towards the end of Iron Flame. Knowing Yarros has carefully crafted the plot of the Empyrean Series to run over the course of five books, it would come as no surprise to learn that Violet's unique dynamic with the dragons has been set up from book one. Her many interactions prove that the dragons hold a unique respect for Violet's character, and could potentially propel her to the Empyrean.

New Onyx Storm Reveal Makes One Of The Biggest Violet Theories From Fourth Wing A Lot More Likely

Onyx Storm’s new excerpt reveals an action-packed fight against the venin, and one detail from this look could confirm a popular Fourth Wing theory.

The Empyrean has thus far been depicted as an extremely secretive government, and Tairn has repeatedly stated that "humans have no say in the laws of dragons". However, Violet's relationship dynamics with several dragons contradict this statement—as many have clearly accepted her direction and leadership on multiple occasions. Whether or not this confirms Yarros will reveal Violet becoming a member of the Empyrean in Onyx Storm, their involvement in the series' overall plot will surely grow as they work together to defend the veil from the venin.

How Onyx Storm Confirming This Theory Would Change The Series

Violet Would Become Even More Powerful

If Yarros were to confirm this theory in Onyx Storm, Violet would not only become the most powerful rider in Navarre, but would gain access to a vast well of knowledge from the Empyrean. Knowing Violet has a need to discover the truth, this plot shift could reveal mysteries pertaining to the first six and provide an explanation for the reason Andarna's den left her behind. Violet's involvement in the Empyrean would also bridge the gap between dragonkind and humans, forging a stronger alliance to fight the venin.

Such a reveal would ultimately affect the political dynamics of the series, but it is yet unknown how this could affect individual bonds between rider and dragon.

Such a reveal would ultimately affect the political dynamics of the series, but it is yet unknown how this could affect individual bonds between rider and dragon. If Violet does find she has the ability to command the dragons, she will have a powerful army at her disposal—one that could greatly shift the outcome of the war between Navarre and the venin. With so much at stake, Yarros is sure to surprise readers as to how this will all play out in the next Empyrean Series novel.
