In Final Fantasy 16, Torgal is the constant and faithful wolf companion of the story's protagonist Clive, and the only party member other than Clive who players can have any control over during combat, so leveling up Torgal could be a significant boon from a game mechanic standpoint. He is already a strong combatant who also has the ability to heal Clive a little when necessary. Not only that, but his contributions to the story of Final Fantasy 16 add to the game in unique and powerful ways. So, naturally, it makes sense that players would want to help strengthen Torgal's Pedigree.
Warning: This article contains Torgal risks his life countless times throughout Clive's journey as he battles alongside his friend and master, as well as his other beloved friends such as Jill. His combat abilities of Sic, Ravage, and Heal are beneficial in ing Clive and can allow players to tactically utilize the wolf's powers to the greatest extent possible. The ever-adorable Torgal is with Clive in Final Fantasy 16 from the very beginning of the game and is the only permanent party member, so it would make sense for him to be able to level up and become stronger, just as Clive does, especially given the heavy events that he is a key part of during of the game.
How To Level Up Torgal in FF16, Explained
Final Fantasy 16 does not make it very clear how to level up Torgal, but it is all conducted using the Attributes screen for Torgal's Pedigree. This Pedigree is essentially Torgal's XP bar which will increase as Torgal battles alongside Clive and is most effective if players issue commands to Torgal frequently. The in-game description states that "Pedigree affects Torgal's attack potency and increases as Torgal accompanies Clive in battle". The more a player issues commands, the faster his Pedigree improves, but it also naturally goes up simply through accompanying Clive and progressing through FF16's story.
If a player doesn't want to be constantly shifting their attention off of Clive to look at what commands to issue to Torgal, Final Fantasy 16 provides a Ring of Timely Assistance accessory near the beginning of the game which will automate Torgal's commands. By utilizing this ring, Torgal can attack and heal independently using AI. This then allows players to think of other things instead while still getting the benefits of Torgal's attacks and Torgal will still be leveling up his Pedigree throughout FF16. Furthermore, at around halfway through the game, a surprise is revealed about Torgal where he unlocks a new ability that increases his strength in combat by a large amount.
Certain Accessories Can Strengthen Torgal In FF16
Torgal's Pedigree is not the only way to make the dashing wolf an even stronger companion for Clive. There are two accessories in Final Fantasy 16 that can increase Torgal's attack potency. They are both Cavall's Fang, but the one which players can get late in the game is much more effective than the initial one. These will, unfortunately, require the use of an accessory slot but the increase in Torgal's attacks could make it well worth it.
Accessory |
Quest To Receive It |
Effect |
---|---|---|
Cavall's Fang |
A Bone To Pick |
Slightly increases Torgal's attack potency |
Cavall's Fang +1 |
More Than Words |
Increases Torgal's attack potency |
These are optional side quests that are started by reading missives in Clive's chambers at certain points in FF16's story. The first, "A Bone to Pick" unlocks after completing Mid's invention. The second quest, "More than Words" does not come until late in the game. Both quests are directly related to Torgal and heavily feature the adorable hound in their storylines.
Torgal's Stats In FF16
Besides the basic Pedigree, which is essentially Torgal's overall experience bar and a way for him to level up and become stronger in general, there are two other stats in his Attributes section. Normal Attack (Sic) is Torgal's ground-based melee and Lifting Attack (Ravage) is his aerial melee attack where he throws light enemies up into the air as he fights them. Both of these become more potent as their levels increase through being used.
If a player is not using the Ring of Timely Assistance, they will want to make sure they are utilizing both of these attacks in order to level them up. Unfortunately, Torgal's ability to heal does not have a separate stat and does not get more powerful beyond his overall Pedigree being leveled in FF16. As Torgal gets increased points in the Sic and Ravage attacks, they will each become stronger over time, in addition to slight boosts from his Pedigree leveling up.
FF16's Torgal Is Not Simply A Normal Wolf
In the last half of Final Fantasy 16, Torgal has a surprise twist of his own to add to the story. After a dangerous moment where Jill is about to be murdered, Torgal saves her after he has an impressive transformation. After that transpires, Torgal will have a new, more powerful form that can make him an even more effective companion and strong combatant. Though he remains his loyal and adorable self, he unlocks a new set of powers. After this event occurs, there are new attributes listed under Torgal's Pedigree with "The Blood of Fenrir".
Torgal is an adorable and lovable party member with expressive features and provides loyalty and affection that is beautiful to witness. Though it's sad when he gets injured in battle, his proficiency, and strength in combat as well as his later latent magic powers can make him an incredible ally. Leveling up Torgal's Pedigree and getting the accessories to increase his attack potency can help to make him even more impressive. The addition of Torgal in the game adds to Final Fantasy 16's emotionally charged narrative, while also helping to add more joy to the story through the love of a loyal hound.
