Game of Thrones creator and Elden Ring writer George R.R. Martin has stated that he believes games are even bigger than movies now. Although George R.R. Martin is largely known for his literary works, he was heavily involved with HBO's adaptation of Game of Thrones and helped with the world-building of Elden Ring. The renowned author knows a thing or two about the entertainment industry after all these years, making him a pretty reputable expert on the subject.

Despite itting he doesn't avidly play games, George R.R. Martin worked on Elden Ring to help FromSoftware flesh out its rich world. The writer is known for his ability to craft extensive histories of fictional worlds and allow them to feel lived in. His exhaustive level of detail has allowed HBO the ability to organically create spin-offs for Game of Thrones thanks to the stories that exist in the vast world that he created. Whether the same will happen for Elden Ring remains to be seen, but Martin has lots of respect for the gaming industry.

In a new blog post, George R.R. Martin also praised Elden Ring, noting how incredible he thought it looks. Although his work is only a small piece of the overall game, it's an important one that will set the tone of the world that players will spend tens of hours in. Whether or not his experience of working on Elden Ring will lead to him lending his skills to future games is unknown, but he seems to see the impact of the medium.

Nonetheless, Martin isn't wrong about his assessment of the industry. Gaming has eclipsed many other forms of entertainment due to how much money it brings in, the interactive element, and how universal it often is. This was particularly noteworthy in 2020 when the pandemic caused Hollywood to delay many of its films, find other forms of content to release on streaming services, and so on. The gaming industry kept booming, even with some titles being delayed.

George R.R Martin's work on Elden Ring shows how much the tides are turning for gaming. Actors, big-name writers, and other industry outsiders are looking to be a part of gaming in some way. Whether or not a big Hollywood director ever decides to step up and spearhead a true AAA game remains to be seen. Some film legends like Steven Spielberg and Guillermo del Toro have done tremendous things in the gaming industry, but haven't quite brought their directorial talents into the interactive medium themselves.
