Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for Ghosts season 4, episode 22, “The Devil Went Down To Woodstone”. You have been warned! The season 4 finale of Ghosts is in the books, and there's lots to unpack for the immediate and the future setup for multiple character arcs and, in the biggest shock of all, Jay's unintended and literal deal with the devil. As season 4 tees up a major plot line for season 5, it navigates its way through a central story arc between two main ghosts and their unrequited love for one another, as well as the return of the most unsettling ghost on the property, hellbent (or heaven sent, depending on your point of view) on stopping the "evils" in the Manor.

Through more deaths on the grounds, parental discovery, and forgiveness of both a costly sneeze and a perceived slight after death, the merry band of unfortunate souls have navigated another year of Purgatory. Although and it is as troubling as it possibly can be.

Jay's Deal With Elias Explained (& How It Sets Up His Future)

Jay, What Did You Do And Why?!

elias ghosts-1

In the most shocking turn of events in the episode and the season, Jay discovers he's sold his soul to the devil, inadvertently, to the devil's emissary, Elias Woodstone, after speaking to the food editor of New York Magazine, who told him she'd be giving him a cover story article of Mahesh after his publicist help sell it to her. Elias, who first reappears in season 4, episode 14 after being "promoted" to demon and can show up physically on Earth to collect souls, informs him that the deal is permanent and eerily foreshadows that he may be seeing Jay in Hell sooner than later, causing a light to fall from the ceiling, nearly killing him.

Ghosts Season 4: Everything You Need To Know

CBS' uproarious comedy series Ghosts has spooked up a big audience across its first four seasons.

Jay has spent the majority of the show's run as the ancillary player as he cannot interact with the ghosts (save for his time as an accidental ghost in season 4, episode 9), and allowing him to be a part of this major plot line heading into season 5 will give his character extra shine as he navigates his apparent impending death. The ghosts and Sam are set on helping Jay stay out of harm's way, and while there may be no way out for Jay at the moment, there is one existing way to keep Elias away: getting him back into the vault he died in.

Sam & Isaac Successfully Debut Their Vampire Novel

Goes Off (Almost) Without A Hitch

isaac ghosts

The culmination of a secondary season 4 plot point occurs, Sam's publishing of Isaac's novel is happening, and the book launch party that was set initially for Manhattan is moved to Woodstone at Sam's insistence, as Isaac would have been unable to participate in anything off-property. The event was attended by a litany of major publishers and, despite Patience's best attempts to stop the event, including a reappearance of her outrageous ghost power, Jay turned the negative into a positive and the event was a smashing success.

The Manhattan launch party was revealed unknowingly to Isaac through a comedy of errors: It was first revealed by Bela to Kyle, who is also able to see ghosts, who then told Pete when they were hanging out off the property.

Now that Isaac's novel is complete, and it appears the New York literary scene is interested in its success, his story will finally be told, and will allow Isaac to be ed the way he thought he wouldn't be, although not fully in the way he intended. Jay's assistance in spinning the wall blood as part of the show certainly helped quell what could have been a disaster for the first public reading, but the success of the event allows for a small set-up to explore its success in season 5.

What's Next For Alberta & Pete After Their Unexpected Kiss Twist

Pete and Alberta's Love Story Begins

peter alberta kiss

Love was in the air throughout this season as Alberta found herself falling for Pete in a way she wasn't prepared for, and after the other ghosts stalled Patience by telling her that Alberta was having impure thoughts about him, Patience forced her to reveal her secrets to the entire group of ghosts in a shaming ceremony. Unbeknownst to Alberta, Pete hears her say how she truly felt about him, and although the other ghosts think he left the property to get some time away, he returns and reveals he's broken up with Donna to explore his feelings for Alberta, and the two share a kiss.

The story arc itself added more romance to the season, as the souls navigate their eternity together, and we'll undoubtedly discover more about their love and where it's going throughout season 5. While not all love stories are buttoned up on this show, eternity is waiting, and the spirits have nothing but time to figure out who, and how, they'll love in the afterlife.

Patience Returns But Leaves Too (Can She Come Back Again?)

She's About To Make Life Difficult At Woodstone Manor

patience ghosts

It wouldn't be a Woodstone event without a shocking surprise, and the most unsettling one occurs as Patience returns from the dirt and finds her way in the middle of the book launch party. Sensing evil in the area, she is convinced she will stop this event, but when Jay turns her ghost power into part of the show, she storms out of Mahesh, angry and embarrassed, but also likely to extract revenge on the house.

As we know from her experience with Isaac, Patience doesn't forgive easily, and she seems set to return again in season 5...

During our conversation with Ghosts star Asher Grodman earlier this year, he said that viewers should be "as worried as you could possibly be" about Patience's return, but this interaction didn't seem particularly out of the ordinary until the end. As we know from her experience with Isaac, Patience doesn't forgive easily, and seems set to return again in season 5, this time to show the inhabitants of Woodstone, living and dead, that she is not one to be trifled with.

How Else The Ghosts Season 4 Finale Sets Up Season 5

So Much More Story To Tell For All The Ghosts

The season 4 finale of Ghosts sets up major plot lines and story arcs throughout season 5, and potentially season 6, including Jay's deal with the devil and the Pete/Alberta romance. We also see the reappearance of Nigel, Isaac's former fiance who he left at the alter in season 3's finale and a recall to viewers that their story is not yet quite over, as well as a quick reminder of Sass' recent change in his love life.

There's still a ton of outstanding plot lines to navigate, including whether Kyle will return to Woodstone again now that he's somewhat involved with Bela, as well as the anticipated return of Chris, the newest death at Woodstone who is parachuting around the world in the afterlife. With other major questions still left to be answered, including the last main ghost death not yet known, the build to season 5 seems strong.
