Ginny and Marcus' future, but Lampert had more to share on the topic.
During an interview with ScreenRant's Tatiana Hullender for Ginny & Georgia season 3, Lampert explained that the Sunshine poem "really represents where [Ginny and Marcus are] at right now." The Ginny & Georgia creator, who was interviewed alongside showrunner Sarah Glinski, went on to note that Ginny's ability to see Marcus' sunshine through the dark establishes these characters in a place of hope. However, Marcus' attitude about rehab makes things far less optimistic going into Ginny & Georgia season 4. See Lampert's full quote below:
ScreenRant: I adore Marcus and Ginny together, but I thought it was the right choice to have them be separate for most of the season because of what he's going through. But we leave off on him reading Ginny's poem. Can you tease what that means for them in season 4?
Sarah Lampert: Yeah, I had the "Sunshine poem" kicking around for a few years now, and I was just waiting for the right moment to place it. And to me, that really represents where they're at right now. She sees his sunshine through the dark, and I think that it's very much a place of hope.
But also a place of hopelessness because Marcus is on his way to rehab - we see that, but we also see that he doesn't feel he belongs there. And I just don't think, unless something changes while he's there, that he is in a place to really confront what he's struggling with and make progress and get better until he himself wants to do that.
What Sarah Lampert's Comments About Marcus' Season 3 Moment Mean for Ginny & Georgia Season 4
Things Could Get Worse For Marcus Before They Get Better
Lampter's comment about the hopefulness of Ginny's poem in Ginny & Georgia season 3 is encouraging. It's evident that Ginny can see who Marcus is through his depression and alcoholism, and that's a significant sign that this romance could have brighter days ahead. However, Lampter's point about Marcus' attitude regarding rehab indicates that this Ginny & Georgia character may not be ready to make the necessary changes. There's no doubt that Marcus needs rehabilitation, but unless he actually wants to improve, there's little hope that he will make progress.
There's no doubt that Marcus needs rehabilitation, but unless he actually wants to improve, there's little hope that he will make progress.
Before reading Ginny's poem in Ginny & Georgia, Marcus made it clear to his mother that he did not approve of their choice to send him to rehab. He had never acknowledged that he had a drinking problem, and, as of the end of this installment, he is still furious that Max told their parents the truth about his behavior. Although it's possible that rehab will help Marcus realize he truly needs help, it's also possible that he will return in Ginny & Georgia season 4 feeling even more resentful. This wouldn't bode well for his romance with Ginny, so a happy ending for these characters could still be a long way off.
Our Take On Marcus' Ginny & Georgia Season 3 Ending
Marcus' Story Represents A Tragic Reality
Even throughout Marcus' worsening alcoholism in Ginny & Georgia season 3, he has continued to treat Ginny with kindness and love. This is the "sunshine" that Ginny's poem identified. Unfortunately, Lampert's comments suggest that things will worsen for Marcus before they improve. That sunshine may get harder to see through the darkness that continues to plague his character. As heartbreaking as this is, it's a refreshingly accurate look at how depression and addiction can impact good people and those they love. This representation in Ginny & Georgia is important, as is the hope that Ginny's poem inspires.
