Warning! Spoilers for Ginny & Georgia season 3 ahead!
Marcus is Ginny's primary love interest in Ginny & Georgia, but they're no longer in an official relationship going into season 3. This pair had immediate chemistry when they met each other back in Ginny & Georgia season 1, but it took them until season 2 to finally figure out that they were in love with one another. Ginny found Marcus to be the one person that she could completely open up to, and even in season 3, he's the only one of her friends who knows the truth about Georgia. Regardless, Ginny and Marcus aren't a couple in this most recent batch of episodes.
Life has always been complicated for Ginny in Ginny & Georgia, and this was even more the case in season 3. With Ginny & Georgia season 3 is nearly just as complicated.
Why Ginny And Marcus Are Broken Up At The Beginning Of Ginny & Georgia Season 3
Marcus & Ginny Both Have A Lot Going On
Marcus and Ginny are as close as ever in Ginny & Georgia season 3, but they aren't actually in a romantic relationship anymore. Marcus broke things off back in season 2 as his depression grew steadily worse. It's implied that this character is already predisposed to depressive episodes in Ginny & Georgia, but the death of his childhood best friend a year before the start of season 1 made it even harder for Marcus to cope. Still, he's one of the more self-aware characters in this Netflix series, so he recognized that his own problems made maintaining a healthy relationship with Ginny challenging.

Georgia's Tom Decision Has To Be The Dumbest Thing She's Done
Georgia Miller has made many questionable choices in Ginny & Georgia, but her Tom Fuller decision in season 2 is one of the dumbest ones.
Marcus wasn't unhappy with Ginny in Ginny & Georgia, but he knew that he needed to take time and focus on himself. Moreover, he recognized in season 2 that his current state wasn't good for Ginny and her own problems. When Marcus broke things off, Ginny was heartbroken. The boy didn't fully explain everything he was dealing with, so Ginny assumed that he had simply lost interest in her. However, Max explained that Marcus tends to go through these down periods and that breaking up with Ginny wasn't personal.
She still loved him and wanted to be together, but she understood that Marcus needed more than he needed a girlfriend.
Once Ginny understood what was happening with Marcus, her perspective of their breakup shifted. She still loved him and wanted to be together, but she understood that Marcus needed more than he needed a girlfriend. She chose to be there for him as his friend, and it wasn't long until she needed the same thing in return. Georgia's arrest at the end of Ginny & Georgia season 3 meant that it wasn't really the best idea for Ginny to have a boyfriend either.
Ginny And Marcus Continue To See One Another On & Off Throughout Season 3
It Isn't Easy For Them To Stay Away
Ginny had a solid understanding of where she and Marcus stood going into Ginny & Georgia season 3, but the lines quickly became more blurred. She maintained from episode to episode that she and Marcus were just friends. They ed one another through their troubles and continued to sneak through windows to hang out and even cuddle. The pair was playful and encouraging, either distracting the other from their problems or offering advice, depending on the situation. It worked for a while, but eventually, Ginny became confused and frustrated.
Marcus and Ginny came dangerously close to kissing during a playful rendezvous in the Bakers' driveway, and that was one of the first instances in season 3 when it was clear that their friendship approach wasn't going to work. Though they managed to pull away from one another, Marcus' drinking meant that he could no longer maintain boundaries. At the sophomore dance, he kissed Ginny as they slow danced. This made Ginny ecstatic and gave her hope that they would get back together. However, when she mentioned it to Marcus later, he didn't ever having kissed her.
Why Marcus Tells Ginny He Doesn't Love Her Anymore - Does He Mean It?
Marcus Promised Georgia He Wouldn't Hold Ginny Back
Not only did Marcus kiss Ginny, but he trashed the AP English classroom in retaliation against the teacher's racism toward her. He didn't doing either of these things, and quickly identified this to be a problem. Marcus' depression was getting worse and worse, and the consequences of this were becoming more severe. It was only a matter of time before Ginny got hurt by it all, and with everything going on with Georgia in Ginny & Georgia season 3, this wasn't something she needed on her plate. After hearing about the kiss at the dance, Marcus again pushed Ginny away.
Marcus told Ginny that he didn't love her anymore, and this successfully got the girl to back off. Of course, he didn't mean it. Marcus said as much when Max questioned him about his decision after Ginny left. He had promised Georgia that he would never drag Ginny down or hold her back, but Marcus recognized that his current struggles would have done precisely that. Still, he couldn't quite stick to the boundary. The more that Ginny struggled, the more Marcus wanted to be there for her. Eventually, he had to tell her the truth—he had never stopped loving her.
Where Ginny And Marcus Stand At The End Of Ginny & Georgia Season 3
They Still Have A Lot To Figure Out
After Marcus tried to put a hard stop to his relationship with Ginny in Ginny & Georgia season 3, she did her best to move on and have some fun. She dated a boy from her poetry class, Wolfe, but this resulted in an unwanted pregnancy and abortion. Georgia asked Marcus to be there for Ginny, and he couldn't help but oblige. After he showed up at the doctor's office, Marcus and Ginny resumed their friendship, and those added layers of romance came right back as well. This time around, Marcus didn't fight it too much. However, their situation hadn't really changed.
Ginny saw Marcus really hit rock bottom with his drinking at the end of Ginny & Georgia season 3. When she tried to surprise him in his bedroom, she saw that he was so intoxicated that he had wet the bed. His subsequent behavior really showed Ginny just how much Marcus needed help. So, while we didn't see Ginny's reaction to Marcus going away to rehab in season 3, she's very likely to understand. Hopefully, Marcus will have gotten the help he needs by the events of Ginny & Georgia season 4, and this couple can finally have a healthier relationship.
