Dolores Umbridge is one of Deathly Hallows' ending.
The fates of other memorable Harry Potter villains, including Voldemort, Bellatrix Lestrange, and Peter Pettigrew, were fully addressed in the series' final installment. Umbridge, on the other hand, initially had a more ambiguous fate following Harry's encounter with her in the Ministry of Magic. She was last seen being stunned, as Harry and Hermione Granger took the Slytherin's locket Horcrux from her and saved the Muggle-born Mary Cattermole from persecution, but Umbridge's story did not end there.
Dolores Umbridge Was Sentenced To Life In Azkaban After Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows
She Was Punished For Her Involvement In The Muggle-Born Registration Commission
As revealed by J.K. Rowling on Pottermore in 2015, and now available via WizardingWorld, Umbridge was sentenced to life in Azkaban prison in the Deathly Hallows' aftermath. She was put on trial after Voldemort's defeat due to the enthusiastic and willing role she played as the leader of the Muggle-Born Registration Commission. Many of the Muggle-born individuals she sentenced in this position did not survive their punishment, leaving Umbridge responsible for numerous deaths.

Dolores Umbridge's Secret Past Makes Her Role In Harry Potter Even More Despicable
Dolores Umbridge falsely accused Muggle-borns of lying about their status in Harry Potter, and as horrible as this is, her secret past makes it worse.
The trial concluded with Umbridge being found guilty of the torture, imprisonment, and deaths of the innocent individuals she sentenced. She resided in Azkaban alongside the surviving Death Eaters who were re-imprisoned after the Battle of Hogwarts. She presumably lived the rest of her years in Azkaban, struggling to adjust to prison after the lavish lifestyle she was used to living as a powerful government official. In an alternate timeline caused by Harry Potter and the Cursed Child's time-turner story, Umbridge became the Hogwarts Heistress due to Voldemort winning the Battle of Hogwarts in this timeline.
It Was Only A Matter Of Time Before Umbridge Faced Consequences For Her Actions
Her Crimes Eventually Had To Catch Up With Her
Umbridge's villainous schemes were already afoot before Harry met her, as she arranged for two Dementors to be sent after him in the summer before his fifth year at Hogwarts. She then pushed for Harry to be convicted for using magic as an underage wizard, even though he only did so because of the Dementors she sent after him.
While she still had to suffer being a prisoner, her sentence was not as brutal as it would have been earlier in the series when the Dementors guarded Azkaban and fed off the inmates' misery and despair.
Umbridge proceeded to torture Harry and other students with the detentions she gave them, taught propaganda instead of teaching them Defense Against the Dark Arts, and pushed many longtime genuinely good teachers out of Hogwarts. Being carried off by the centaurs and publicly antagonized by Peeves was not enough punishment considering her many heinous actions, especially given her later crimes leading the Muggle-Born Registration Commission.
Umbridge facing more permanent consequences was inevitable, and being sentenced to life in Azkaban was long overdue. While she still had to suffer being a prisoner, her sentence was not as brutal as it would have been earlier in the series when the Dementors guarded Azkaban and fed off the inmates' misery and despair.
The Harry Potter Books & Movies Should Have Shown Umbridge's Downfall
A Quick Mention Or Montage Would Have Sufficed
Considering how important she was as an antagonist in Order of the Phoenix and Deathly Hallows, Umbridge's downfall should have been shown in the books and movies. In chapter 36 of Deathly Hallows, "The Flaw in the Plan," there is a paragraph talking about the remaining Death Eaters being captured, the innocent being released from Azkaban, Imperiused individuals no longer being cursed, and Kingsley Shacklebolt being named Minister of Magic. There could have been a brief mention in this paragraph of Umbridge and other of Voldemort's regime at the Ministry of Magic being sent to Azkaban as well.
Hermione Granger later succeeded Kingsley Shacklebolt as Minister of Magic.
Deathly Hallows: Part 2 could have included a quick montage of Umbridge and the Death Eaters being sent to Azkaban, especially since Imelda Staunton had already reprised the role in Deathly Hallows: Part 1. HBO's Harry Potter series could amend this by showing Umbridge being sentenced to life in Azkaban during the show's final season, presumably during the series finale, although this is years away from coming to fruition. Not addressing Umbridge's fate in the Harry Potter books and movies was a missed opportunity, but at least there is now confirmation of her Azkaban sentencing.

Harry Potter is a multimedia franchise about an orphaned boy who enrolls at Hogwarts School of Wizardry, where he learns the truth about himself, his family, and the terrible evil that haunts the magical world. Adapted from the novels, Harry Potter is an eight-episode film saga that follows the journey of Harry Potter and his friends, Hermoine Granger and Ron Weasley, as they navigate the tricky world of growing up, school life, and magic. Starting from year one and moving to their seventh year, the films chronicle the students' time at Hogwarts while unfurling a sinister plot that centers around the unsuspecting Harry. With the return of the dark wizard, Voldemort, the students and professors at Hogwarts will fight to carry on as the world around them may change forever. Harry Potter has expanded beyond the world of its films and novels with several video games, a spin-off film series titled Fantastic Beasts, and even attractions at Universal Studios.
