Jason Isaacs, who played Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter movie series, reacts to HBO's recent casting news for the TV adaptation. Earlier today, it was announced that Johnny Flynn (Emma., Lovesick) has been cast to play Lucius while Lox Pratt will play Draco in HBO's Harry Potter show. Meanwhile, Bel Powley and Daniel Rigby have been cast as Petunia and Vernon Dursley, and Katherine Parkinson will play Ron's mother, Molly Weasley.

In light of the news, Isaacs has shared a positive video on Instagram about Flynn's casting. He praised the actor's work as "brilliant," expressed that he is "thrilled" to the torch to Flynn, a "monstrously talented renaissance man" he has had the pleasure of working with on the 2021 war movie Operation Mincemeat. Isaacs concluded the video with a short message to the actor. Check out his reaction below:

I just heard that the great Johnny Flynn with be playing Mr. Malfoy in the new HBO TV series, which is sensational news for Harry Potter fans, which I want because Johnny is a brilliant actor. Irritatingly, he's a brilliant musician as well, and a really lovely guy...and I can't wait to see what he comes up with. Johnny, if you're watching this, enjoy yourself.

Isaacs also posted on X, where he also praised the casting and said that HBO "couldn't have handed the snake-topped baton on to anyone better" and jokingly said that he hopes the actor and musician won't have to sing. Check out Isaacs' comments and the post below:

A fantastic actor, a lovely man and, irritatingly, a rather brilliant musician too. Couldn’t have handed the snake-topped baton on to anyone better. Just please don’t make him sing…

What This Means For Johnny Flynn's Casting As Lucius Malfoy

Jason Isaacs Is Pleased With Johnny Flynn's Casting

Flynn, who is known for his portrayal of David Bowie in the 2020 movie Stardust, now has Isaacs' blessing to take on the role. The original Harry Potter star has noted that they couldn't have picked a better actor for the role. Having worked with Flynn on their 2021 war movie Operation Mincemeat together, Isaacs' comments also come from the perspective of him knowing the actor and musician both professionally and personally.

The original Harry Potter star has recently voiced for Tom Felton's return to the franchise, as the actor, who previously played his onscreen son, Draco, will star in Broadway's Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. He has also previously expressed mixed feelings about the TV series and not being involved in the reboot. However, Isaacs seems to be very pleased with his onscreen replacement.

Our Take On Jason Isaacs' Reaction To Johnny Flynn's Lucius Malfoy Casting

Jason Isaacs Is Intrigued, And So Am I

Johnny Flynn in Emma.

Isaacs has taken the news very well, with his messages both positive and lighthearted. In the video, he jokingly offers Flynn one piece of advice as the former Lucius Malfoy, warning the musician about Dobby, who betrays his character and turns to help Harry Potter instead. He also teasingly "warned" HBO not to make Flynn sing in the reboot. It seems that Flynn's casting has sparked a special interest in the White Lotus actor, who is now curious to see the new take.

As a longtime Harry Potter fan, I can certainly picture Johnny Flynn, who is very versatile as an actor, as Lucius. Though information has been scarce so far, I'm very intrigued to hear his take on the character and see what he does with the role. It is especially exciting because Lucius is not introduced until the second book and the second movie, but this casting indicates that he will appear in season 1, with the show establishing his important story sooner.
