Chase became the “new House” at the end of season 8, but his fate had been foreshadowed five years earlier in House faked his death in “Everybody Dies,” the Diagnostic Medicine department at Princeton-Plainsboro needed a new boss. The fact that Chase got the job was not a surprise, even more so because House had been teasing that he was going to become Gregory House’s successor for years.

Throughout all House had a lot of fellows during the show, he and the audience had a special relationship with the first team – Foreman, Cameron, and Chase. As such, House’s eventual successor was probably going to be one of those three.

Chase Was Fired By House In Season 3 (And Eventually Became The New House)

House Firing Chase Was Strangely A Compliment

As strange as it may sound, House firing Chase at the end of season 3 foreshadowed that Jesse Spencer’s character was going to eventually become the “new House.” House’s decision to fire Chase came off as a surprise, even though Chase had screamed at House earlier in the episode. Despite having problems with each other from time to time, House and Chase usually worked well together and seemed like a perfect duo. Of the original team, Chase was the one who had been working under House the longest, yet he was the only one to be fired.

According to House, he only hired Chase because Chase's dad, a famous doctor, called and asked him to.

House was trying to prevent Foreman from quitting, which made Chase’s firing even more surprising. Rather than keeping Foreman, House was apparently making things worse by firing Chase out of the blue. However, in hindsight, House’s decision made a lot of sense and was a strange sign of respect for Chase. House was tired and realized it was time for a change. There was nothing else Chase could learn from House, nor there was anything House had yet to discover about Chase. Once Chase left the team, they were now equals.

There Was No Better Choice Than Chase To Become House’s Replacement

While Chase didn’t work on diagnoses for a while after leaving House’s team, he was always one of the most brilliant minds on the show. Foreman and Cameron were both great doctors who would often take House out of his comfort zone, but Chase was very creative when it came to diagnoses. Many of his ideas were out of the box and could come off as an absurdity, very much like most of House’s own diagnoses. Chase wasn’t afraid to make mistakes, and that is why he was the perfect replacement for House.

It’s quite ironic that the only character out of the original team to be fired by House is the one who replaced him in the end.

Foreman did share a lot of traits with House but did not perceive that as something good. In fact, Foreman first left the team because he didn’t want to become the “new House.” Chase had the experience of having worked under House for years and the skills to lead the diagnosis department, especially considering he worked with House for a couple more years before taking over. It’s quite ironic that the only character out of the original team to be fired by House is the one who replaced him in the end.

Chase Becoming The New House Affected His Relationship With Cameron

Cameron And Chase’s Marriage Fell Apart

Chase didn’t just become House’s replacement as head of the diagnosis department – he started to become like House in many ways throughout the show. This is something that directly affected his relationship with Cameron and eventually caused them to break up. Cameron and Chase’s failed marriage is one of the most complicated storylines in House, as they went from an unlikely but charming couple to a marriage that was bound to fail. Cameron believed Chase had become too much like House, particularly after he let a patient die.

A House Reboot Would Have To Answer One Tragic Question About This Fan-Favorite Character

Not only would a House reboot be very difficult to pull off given how the show ended, but it would also have to address a bittersweet storyline.

Ironically, House had nothing to do with what happened to President Dibala in season 6. Still, it’s difficult to deny that House did influence Chase in a lot of ways. Chase never rejected House’s influence and pieces of advice like Foreman or Cameron would do, which is why he was the perfect “successor.” Character’s character growth was one of the best things about House, and it was most fitting that the show ended with Jesse Spencer’s character as the new Head of Diagnostic Medicine.

House is a medical mystery drama in which the villain is typically a difficult-to-diagnose medical malady. It follows Dr. Gregory House (Hugh Laurie), a world-renowned disabled diagnostician with a notorious substance abuse issue. With his team of world-class doctors, House has built a reputation as one of the most brilliant doctors in the world - an especially impressive feat when taking into that he rarely actually sees his patients.
