As good as How I Met Your Mother was at the ridiculousness and light-hearted comedy such as goats and pineapples, the show did not shy away from emotional gut-punches. So often, throughout the show's nine seasons, the creators and performers left the audiences in tears, whether that be through shock deaths, endings of relationships, or surprisingly sad endings.
All of the main characters are involved in their fair share of sad storylines, a testament to the character's meaningfulness to the fans. From the season 1 finale all the way up to the series finale, the show was always willing to deliver episodes that were best enjoyed with tissues for tears nearby.
Updated on January 24th, 2022 by Rhys McGinley: How I Met Your Mother never failed to make audiences laugh, but it never shied away from making them cry either. Some of the best How I Met Your Mother episodes so happened to be some of the saddest How I Met Your Mother episodes.
With audiences so invested in the lives of Ted, Robin, Barney, Marshall, and Lily for nearly a decade, it was not hard for the show to use good writing to pull on the heartstrings, but certain sad How I Met Your Mother episodes beat the rest in evoking an emotional reaction from fans.
'Where Were We?' (Season 2, Episode 1)
Right from the get-go How I Met Your Mother proved itself as a show with a real emotional core stemming from the characters. It hurt fans immediately by splitting up the show's central and most relatable couple, Marshall and Lily.
The premiere of season 2 follows Marshall as he deals with Lily's leaving in the season 1 finale. Seeing how much Marshall struggled obviously got used for comedic purposes. Still, he is a loved character, and seeing him this broken was not nice, even if he did make positive steps at the end of the episode. An extra little gut-punch comes when Lily arrives at MacLaren's, before leaving again upon seeing the happiness of her friends.
'Sunrise' (Season 9, Episode 17)
Season 9 has a handful of emotional episodes. 'Sunrise' is one that focuses on the dynamic between Ted and Robin and sees Ted face his feelings for her before letting her go.
While there are no shocking moments of heartbreak or anything, seeing Ted's unwavering feelings for Robin laid on the table before he finally lets her go leads to a poignant episode of the show - even for those who do not like the couple that much.
'Band Or DJ?' (Season 8, Episode 13)
Sometimes episodes of television only need one moment, one scene to be ed as truly sad. That is the case for 'Band or DJ' where one conversation between Ted and Lily propels it to almost heartbreaking status.
The episode has a lot of laughs as Ted attempts to plan Barney and Robin's wedding until it becomes clear he is doing so to distract from his feelings for her. That is nothing new. What was new was Lily's heartbreaking ission where she talks about sometimes wishing she was not a mother. The conversation between the two friends is powerful and enough to make any fan tear up.
'Vesuvius' (Season 9, Episode 19)
'Vesuvius' may not immediately stick out as the most memorable episode in of sadness. Still, hindsight is a powerful thing, and after the reveal of the finale, this episode becomes so poignant.
The episode sees Tracy and Ted at the Farhampton Inn in the future, realizing they have told most of their stories until Ted comes up with one. That story has a bit of emotion in it with Robin being reunited with her mother, but the true sadness comes after this story has finished. After Ted tells the story about Robin's mom, Tracy, one of the best characters of the show in her singular season, asks, "What mother is going to miss her daughter's wedding?" prompting sadness from Ted, and upon rewatch, fans realize this is because Tracy will not live to see her daughter's wedding.
'A Change Of Heart' (Season 6, Episode 18)
Many of How I Met Your Mother's saddest episodes have something to do with Barney and his growth. 'A Change Of Heart' is one such episode and is an emotional rollercoaster.
He finds himself feeling immense feelings for Nora, but sabotages it by telling her he is lying about things he really told the truth about. The end of the episode sees him boldly go and meet Nora and her parents, itting his torn feelings, before it is revealed to be merely his imagination, and he leaves without walking in the restaurant. Seeing him so on the cusp of letting himself be vulnerable, to feel and give love, was painful. Many fans believe Nora could have been the endgame for Barney, but it was not meant to be.
'The Goat' (Season 3, Episode 17)
'The Goat' is famous for its titular character who got built up for a long time in the show, and while the goat in question was hilarious, the episode has a truly sad element.
The episode sees Barney desperately try to justify breaking the bro-code and sleeping with Robin, before Ted reveals he already knows, proceeding to cut Barney out of his life and say they are no longer friends. While fans understand Ted, it is hard not to sympathize with Barney. Seeing the two friends fallout is not easy for invested audiences, and even though it did not last long, it is one of the saddest things to happen in the show involving the two.
'Shelter Island' (Season 4, Episode 5)
Right at the core of each season of How I Met Your Mother is Ted's (oftentimes obsessive) quest for love. Apart from the obvious two in Robin and Tracy, the closest he got to the apple pie family life was with Stella.
'Shelter Island' was the day of the pair's wedding, and on that day, Stella decided to leave Ted at the altar for her ex-husband Tony, who Ted invited to the wedding. No matter how much wrong Ted does throughout the show, it is impossible not to feel heartbroken for him.
'Come On' (Season 1, Episode 22)
The first truly heartbreaking episode of How I Met Your Mother comes at the very end of the first season, with 'Come On' bringing about Lily and Marshall's temporary, yet heartbreaking, separation.
The whole debacle of Lily going to San Fransisco to follow her artistic dreams was building up to this point. That moment where Ted is walking home and spots Marshall holding Lily's engagement ring in the rain is one of the series' saddest, with the lack of dialogue and immediate recognition over what has happened adding to the down atmosphere.
'Tick Tick Tick' (Season 7, Episode 10)
For fans of Barney and Robin, 'Tick Tick Tick' is probably the most painful to watch, except for the series finale. For all the wrong Barney does, his character is so great that he garners a huge amount of sympathy at the end of this episode.
After cheating on Nora with Robin, who likewise cheated on Kevin, the two agreed to get back together and leave their partners. Barney did as such and waited in MacLarens, only for Robin to give him the most painful head shake in history. Barney's longest second was painful, and the follow-up likewise as we see him clean up Robin's room of all the romantic things he set up there.
'Symphony Of Illumination' (Season 7, Episode 12)
For most of How I Met Your Mother, Robin is fiercely independent and empowering, wanting to focus on herself and her career, with not much interest in kids and a husband.
However, the options for a change of heart were always there; she did marry Barney after falling in love, after all. However, in 'Symphony Of Illumination,' it is revealed to Robin and the audience that Robin is medically unable to carry a child, taking the option away. Seeing her process this information is Robin at her most vulnerable, and it is difficult to watch, especially with the image of her kids fading away.
