Due to its style, lasting appeal, and even some of the behind-the-scenes aspects of the movie, Coraline remains an iconic movie to rewatch, over a decade after its release. Coraline is based on Neil Gaiman's novella of the same name and was the debut feature film for LAIKA Studios, the studio responsible for other stop-motion animation films. A children's fantasy with darker elements for older audiences, Coraline follows the titular girl who discovers an idealized version of her humdrum life at the apartment complex her family moves to, only to learn the new life comes at a cost.

Coraline is one of the best stop-motion horror movies ever, and its 91% on Rotten Tomatoes and $131 million at the box office (via Box Office Mojo) are testaments to its popularity. It's the success of this movie that put LAIKA on the Hollywood map, even if the studio's films since have not quite met the high bar set by their first movie. Mixing mythology, body horror, psychedelic filmmaking, and a well-crafted story about family, Coraline is a unique production that's always fun to return to. But those looking to stream the movie won't love their options.

Coraline Is Streaming On Prime Video

The Film Has A New Streaming Home

On November 24, 2024, Coraline finds a new home for fans to rewatch it, as it lands on Amazon Prime Video. Like many films, Coraline has seen its streaming home change numerous times over the years, depending on who acquires the rights. Prime Video is a big streaming platform for it though as the movie was previously only available at no extra cost on places like Tubi and The Roku Channel, which come with ads throughout.

Many might expect Coraline to be streaming on Disney+ because there is a common misconception that it's a Disney film. This is most likely because the director of Coraline, Henry Selick, also did The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) and James and the Giant Peach (1996), which are both Disney films in the stop-motion style of Coraline. If a viewer wasn't paying attention hard enough, it would be easy to assume the film is another of Selick's entries into the Disney animated canon, especially since the other two are on Disney+.

Coraline is rated PG for thematic elements, scary images, some language, and suggestive humor and, while it is aimed at kids, parents may want to be cautious when letting younger children watch. There are some harrowing moments and nightmare-inducing images that may not sit well with small kids.

One of the possible reasons that streaming options for Coraline remain limited is because the movie is still popular enough to get re-released in theaters. After its initial release in 2010, where it made $124.5 million worldwide, it received a re-release in 2022 in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, adding $41,868 to its total. It then received a bigger re-release in America in 2023 when a remastered version hit theaters again from Fatham and added another $7.1 million to its total box office take.

It hasn't stopped either. While 2023 was a remastered re-release, on August 15, 2024, Coraline hit theaters in America again, this time for a special 15th Anniversary release. The studio found even more success with it than the 2023 release, especially with the remastered 3D aspect, which upped the overall intake to more than $185 million. Nutt, Fathom CEO, bragged about the new release (via Variety).

"Last year’s extended run was a testament to this film’s popularity, and now that fans will get to see it in beautifully remastered 3D, it makes this screening that much more special."

Coraline Is Out On Special Edition 4K

Fans At Home Can See It In All Its Glory

For anyone who wants to watch Coraline at home, there is another option available. The movie is available in a 4K Blu-ray edition, which offers the closest a person will come to seeing it in theaters. The Coraline 4K Steelbox edition came out on December 21, 2022, and was awarded a perfect score from blu-ray.com. According to the review, "The 4K UHD presentation is remarkable and includes stellar video and audio."

For fans who love the special features on Blu-rays, the Coraline release has the same special features as the older Shout Factory release. This includes a commentary with writer/director Henry Selick and composer Bruno Coulais. It also includes several small features, an hour-and-a-half look at the storyboards and breakdowns, a making-of featurette broken into chapters, deleted scenes, and more.
