It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia has made its name off showing this group of narcissists trying to pull off the worst schemes imaginable. Any time these guys find a way to save or make money, they will try at any means necessary.
The result is some of the dumbest things you will ever see on TV. While entertaining, if these were done ion real life it would make an even more entertaining True Crime doc than Tiger King. Here are the stupidest money-making schemes the Gang has come up with over the years.
The Gang Solves The Gas Crisis
This episode came out at the height of the gas crises. To use the situation at its full effect, the writers had to come up with a situation more stupid than anyone could imagine. Of course, none of it works out the way it should and the world comes crashing around the gang.
To make money during this trying time, the gang decides to fill barrels full of gasoline at a local gas station. They then attempt to sell it door to door to make a buck. It's so dumb, and Charlie's oil baron persona makes it that much worse.
Dennis And Dee Go On Welfare
The gang constantly talks down on those less fortunate them themselves. That being said, as arrogant as they are, they are still willing to stoop as low as possible to make money. This is displayed perfectly in the episode Dennis And Dee Go On Welfare.
To make free money, Dennis and Dee quit their jobs and attempt to apply for welfare checks. To pull off the scheme, Dennis pretends to suffer from a crack addiction and Dee offensively pretends to be mentally disabled. It's horrifyingly inappropriate, but classic It's Always Sunny.
The Gang Exploits A Miracle
Religion, specifically Catholicism, often plays a role in the series. As Mac is a devout Catholic and in a city full of Irish Catholics, it's no wonder it would be as prevalent as it is. In fact, a whole episode plays off the team taking advantage of this faith.
While doing some maintenance, Mac discovers a bucket that has a water stain in it. To him, it looks like a miraculous stain in the shape of the Virgin Mary. Frank attempts to bank off the stain and creates a sideshow for the devout to come and pray to.
Mac & Dennis Move to the Suburbs
Mac and Denis are completely sick of living in the city. So what do they decide to do? The pair packs their belongings and run away to rent a house in the suburbs. Frank doesn't believe that they can survive though since they are city scum.
They make a bet that if the pair can live in this house for a whole month without giving up, Frank will pay their rent for a year. They accept but slowly deteriorate. How dumb could they be to believe that the worst people imaginable could survive with normal people in the suburbs?
Paddy's Pub: The Worst Bar In Philadelphia
Bars and restaurants survive on good press from customers and critics alike. Of course, with a pub like Paddy's, good press is few and far between. When the gang get a poor review from a local paper, they kidnapped the writer to force him to write a better review.
Apart from the fact that this is a literal crime, it is insane to think that this would work. Why would someone you kidnap be willing to write a positive review for your restaurants? Of course, in the twisted minds of the, It's Always Sunny Gang, they're willing to do anything to get their way.
Sweet Dee Has A Heart Attack
Healthy isn't the best word that could be used to describe a group of friends that constantly put each other and themselves at risk through horrifyingly toxic life choices. Obviously something was going to break at some point, and it just so happened to be Dee's heart.
After she survives a heart attack, the gang wants to do something to reevaluate their lifestyles. Mac and Charlie, for example, get free health insurance by getting office jobs. It's not a horribly dumb idea when you first consider it, but these are not normal people. Obviously, it ends badly.
The Gang Recycles Their Trash
To say that the Gas Crises scheme didn't work would be an understatement. You would think that after that failure the gang would do anything but try another scheme like it. But of course, these fools never learn from their mistakes.
To combat a local strike of garbage workers, the gang attempts to make a buck off removing people's trash. It, of course, goes horribly awry. Once again the scheme falls apart.
Frank's Back in Business
This episode features one of the dumbest running gags in the series. When Frank decides to get his feet back into the business world, Mac and Charlie look to bank off of it. The two create a fitness drink and plan a presentation around it for Frank's investors.
While it might not seem like a bad idea at first, the name and ingredients will tell you otherwise. The two concoct a drink called Fight milk, made of booze, milk, and crow's eggs. It's exactly the kind of thing you would expect from these two.
Sweet Dee Gets Audited
This might be the worst scheme that the gang has come up with to make a buck. Dee has been claiming money for being a surrogate mother and is about to be audited by the IRS. To help her keep the money, the gang devises a baby funeral for her imaginary child.
It's hard to think of anything worse and dumber than this. The entire thing is so offensive, and of course, it all goes horribly wrong, with Dee bleeding out of her eyes and a dog carcass falling out of the baby coffin. It is a nightmare on every level.
Paddy’s Pub: Home Of The Original Kitten Mittens
It might not be the forefront of an entire episode, but this infomercial made my Charlie is probably the dumbest thing that any member of the team has done to make money. Of course, it doesn't actually happen because it is completely illogical.
Charlie has a problem with stray cats in his apartment, and it doesn't help since he tends to feed them. To fix all the noise from them running around his home, he creates mittens for the felines. The commercial is one of the funniest bits in the show because it is so amateurish and stupid.
