Why Kung Fu Panda 4’s Box Office Performance Has Been So Strong (Despite Having Franchise's Worst Reviews)

The timing of this milestone is impressive for Kung Fu Panda 4. For one, the film is over a month out from its release, so its continued box office success represents strong momentum and staying power. Even more notably, Kung Fu Panda 4 became available on digital platforms starting on April 9. Nearly two weeks out from its VOD release, Kung Fu Panda 4 is still a theatrical success, which is an impressive feat.

Kung Fu Panda 4 is also beating the odds by succeeding despite having the franchise’s worst reviews. With a 72% Tomatometer, Kung Fu Panda 4 has the lowest critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes by a fair margin (the next lowest is Kung Fu Panda 2 at 81%). This success is likely due in part to the long wait between Kung Fu Panda 3, which was released in 2017, and this year’s Kung Fu Panda 4.

The seven-year gap meant that Kung Fu Panda 4 could draw on both a returning crowd nostalgic for the franchise as well as new Po fans. Looking at the audience Rotten Tomatoes scores, this wait clearly paid off for Kung Fu Panda 4. Representing the inverse of the Tomatometer scores, Kung Fu Panda 4 saw the highest audience approval rating of the series, with an 86% score.

It is this audience enthusiasm that has driven Kung Fu Panda 4 to continued box office success despite mixed reviews and a VOD release. Looking at the global box office, it is still the lowest-grossing film of the franchise, and is unlikely to catch up as it trails behind Kung Fu Panda 3 by just over $40 million. Domestically, however, it trails behind only the first film. Between this box office status and the most recent international milestone, Kung Fu Panda 4 continually proves itself to be a box office success.
