The Materialists from director Celine Song has wrapped filming, and news about the cast, story, and more has slowly been coming out. Originally billed as The Materialists, Materialists is one of the latest offerings from A24. While some may best know A24 for its horror movies, the studio has been increasingly offering a wider range of genres since its founding in 2012. As of the 96th Academy Awards, the studio has earned 62 nominations and won 18 overall, making it a great destination for filmmakers looking to earn their Oscar.

Only some details about Materialists have been released, including a short synopsis and updates on filming, as well as a lengthy cast list, though character names are still unknown. News about the film only started arriving in early 2024 and only a few major updates came between then and the filming wrap, indicating a fairly breezy production. Materialists is notable as being Celine Song's second feature debut after the acclaimed Past Lives, and looking at the cast list and story details, expectations are high.

Celine Song Is An Academy Award Nominated Director

Nora (Greta Lee) laughing with Hae Sung (Teo Yoo) in Past Lives

Materialists is Celine Song's second directorial outing after the highly acclaimed 2023 film Past Lives, which earned two Academy Award nominations at the 96th ceremony. Past Lives is a moving romantic drama about two childhood friends contemplating their relationship over 24 years, winding in and out of one another's lives. The Korean director was a breakout star with her Past Lives debut, but her follow-up looks to be something much different.

In a December 2023 interview with GQ, Past Lives producer Christine Vachon said about Song's film,

"It feels like she makes a different movie every time, that she’s going to be the kind of a filmmaker who doesn’t make the same movie twice."

The only information regarding the story comes from the initial February announcement. Materialists is set to be a romantic comedy in New York City that follows a matchmaker, her ex-boyfriend, and a wealthy businessman. It's another romance from Song, but this one appears to be of a lighter variety than Past Lives. Johnson will likely play the match-maker, but it's unknown who is the ex-boyfriend and who is the businessman between Pascal and Evans.
