The ending of the My Hero Academia manga series brought with it many intriguing details for audiences. Not only did the epilogue allow fans to see their favorite characters as accomplished pro heroes, but it also explained a few details about their adult lives. Although brief, the time readers spent with the future versions of the protagonists helped paint a picture of what awaits them next.
Among these revelations, the blossoming relationship between Ochako and Izuku stood out as one of the most important. Many fans had been waiting for the couple to confess since early in the series, making this moment one of the most iconic from the epilogue. Yet, other of the fandom are not at all pleased with the finale for denying them the chance to see another of the best ships in the series become a reality.
Izuku and Ochako’s Confession Caused Displeasure Among Shippers
Fans Who Wanted to See Izuku With Bakugo Are Particularly Unsatisfied
During the final moments of chapter #431 of the My Hero Academia manga, Izuku can be seen chasing after Ochako after spending his evening with the of Class 1-A. The protagonist wanted to catch his best friend before she left for her home in hopes of confessing his feelings to her. After an amazing and heartfelt moment between Ochako and Toga, in which the latter demonstrated once again her elusive softer side, the characters decided to move their relationship to the next step. This decision caused the elation of fans of this beloved couple.
Still, not all followers of Kohei Horikoshi’s work received this epilogue with the same degree of happiness, as seeing Izuku and Uraraka become official was not their desired ending. A large portion of the fandom wished to see the protagonist end up with several other characters. From his former bully and current rival Bakugo to his dear friend Todorki, followers of the manga complained that Deku had much better chemistry with them. While many shippers were angry with Izuku’s official couple, few were as vocal as the fans who paired him with Katsuki.

It's Official: My Hero Academia Just Made Its Top Ship Canon
Deku and Uraraka's relationship was never officially confirmed in MHA's ending, but a new chapter on the volume 42 finally makes the ship canon.
Shippers who wanted Izuku to end up with Bakugo took to social media to post their evidence as to why Uraraka was not the right choice. Some fans even suggested that the epilogue of the series should not be considered canon, something that was debunked by the author in a moving afterword. Although still displeased, these fans had no choice but to concede the fight, as the decision taken by Horikoshi would not change. Even then, they still let their dissatisfaction be known.
Fans Claimed That Bakugo Could Have Been a Better Partner
Their Intriguing Friendship Led Them To Believe They Would Be a Good Couple
Bakugo and Midoriya’s friendship is undoubtedly one of the most interesting and well-developed in the My Hero Academia series. Since both characters were vital to the story, with Bakugo often considered the second protagonist, fans were able to see the most important moments of their lives. Readers were able to see how their friendship fell apart after Deku was diagnosed as Quirkless, the horrid treatment Katsuki forced his former best friend to endure, as well as their eventual reconciliation. There is no denying that few people are as important to Izuku as Bakugo.
Nevertheless, the idea of them becoming a couple would never have worked. Katuski might have redeemed himself throughout the final arcs of the series, coming to with the pain and suffering he imposed on Deku, but this does not excuse his actions. If not for Izuku’s refusal to give up on their friendship, they would have never reconciled in the first place. The duo might be closer than ever before by the end of the series, but a relationship was out of the question. Moreover, there were never any hints in the series of one of the two being gay, so the revelation would have been totally out of the blue.
Uraraka Was Deku’s Best Choice
Other Characters Did Not Have Such A Strong Bond With Izuku
One of the major advantages Uraraka had over other potential partners for Izuku was the deep and potent bond that connected them. Ochako entered Deku’s life when he needed a friend more than ever, becoming not only his first friend but also someone who would always have his back. Whenever Midoriya needed someone to assist him, Uravity would do her best to help him or console him in case she was not able to. Their stories were linked from the very beginning, with both being responsible for the other becoming a hero.
Izuku has also demonstrated several times that he has a special place in his heart for Ochako. Whenever his dear friend was in danger, he would not hesitate to come to her aid, no matter what the consequences for him could be. Nowhere is this proven better than during chapter #429 of the series, in which he used the last remnants of One For All’s power to search for Uraraka as she lamented Toga’s death. Izuku, went as far as to call her his hero, implying that she had replaced All Might as his idol.
The My Hero Academia Fandom Has Always Been Involved in Shipping Wars
An Unfortunate Tradition For an Amazing Series
The My Hero Academia fanbase has witnessed several times throughout its decade of existence a plethora of disagreements between its due to shipping. Given that the series has an extensive cast of endearing and beloved characters, there was no surprise in the fact that fans had different ideas of who would be a perfect fit for their favorites. This led to several unpleasant discussions between readers about the pairings that the author would hint at as official.
Readers being displeased with the ending of the series did not come as a surprise, as most followers of Horikoshi’s work expected a portion of the fandom would complain no matter who Deku ended up with. However, this did not prevent the community from coming together in celebration of the ending of this amazing manga. Whilst there might be differences of opinion among fans, their union to commemorate such an accomplishment proves what makes this fandom so special.
Deku and Uraraka becoming an official couple during the final chapter of My Hero Academia might not have been what all fans expected. Nevertheless, this decision does not take away from the joy that the community feels, seeing the story come to a satisfying end. Shipping wars might have split the fandom in the past, but their love for Horikoshi’s incredible manga brought them together in the end.
