A potential greatest procedurals ever made. Since then, however, the series has not been remade, save for a 2006 movie of the same name starring Collin Farrell and Jamie Foxx.

Speaking with Collider, however, Johnson revealed he believed a Miami Vice reboot would be difficult to do, even though there are ideas about how it could come to fruition. The actor mentioned how podcast host Joe Rogan discussed the series before, arguing how it was a classic of its time. Because of this, the star believes there are too many ideas floating around for how it could be redone for it to happen faithfully right now. Check out what Johnson had to say below:

I didn't hear the show, but there was a Joe Rogan show on not too long ago. A friend of mine told me he had heard it. Apparently, he and somebody else were singing my praises about how Sonny Crockett was the greatest character of all time, and there hasn't been anyone before or since that has filled those shoes. I’m not saying that, that's Joe Rogan and somebody else. I feel that way about the period of time and the texture of the '80s. It's different now. It's hard. It could be done. I have a plan for it, but there are so many people with their thumbs in the pie now and so many iterations that it's hard to cut through all of that and really find the gem we found back then.

What Don Johnson's Statement Means For A Miami Vice Reboot

It Doesn't Seem To Be On The Table Right Now

As of writing, there don't appear to be any concrete plans to remake the stylish procedural, with the movie directed by Michael Mann being the latest adaptation. However, Vin Diesel announced a Miami Vice reboot through his production company One Race Television in 2017, meaning ideas for a potential reboot are in the works. Johnson has been privy to some details regarding its production, but by 2021 was no longer in conversation about the series' return. News about the project has also come to a standstill, making its future unclear.

Why Miami Vice Was Canceled (& Will It Return?)

Miami Vice was one of the iconic and groundbreaking shows of the 1980s but here's why it was canceled, and whether it will ever return.

Given the lack of real updates about Diesel's version of the show, it appears Mann's Miami Vice movie will be the last major entry in the franchise for quite some time. Even so, Johnson's current statements highlight how he could see the show returning, although it would require a strong idea to justify getting rebooted. Given how much he liked Rogan discussing how classic the original is, it sounds like a new series would have to be faithful to the tone of the original. This could prove more difficult in the 2020s, depending on how the show were to progress.

Miami Vice ran until season 5 before getting cancelled at NBC in 1990.

Our Take On Miami Vice's Potential Reboot

The Series Doesn't Need To Be Remade

Although Mann's movie proved more could be done with Miami Vice beyond the TV series, its classic look and feel is so cemented in the '80s that a remake wouldn't be able to live up to the original. While it could be interesting to see a more modern take on the show, it also might damage the legacy of the franchise, which has managed to stay true to the original premise so far. Even though a remake could easily happen under Diesel in the future, it's not necessary given how classic the original is.
