The option to disable crossplay in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is featured on PlayStation, but seemingly can not be found on Xbox or PC. MW2's early access campaign has yielded a mixed response from outlets and players, and issues that arose during the multiplayer beta period still remain. Prior to its launch, some believed that crossplay would ruin Modern Warfare 2, and since it went live even more fans are frustrated about being forced into playing with s on other platforms.
While PlayStation s can decide to only participate in MW2's multiplayer with other PlayStation s, the option to disable crossplay reportedly does not appear in-game on Xbox and PC - much to fans' dismay. As reported by VGC, PlayStation s are capable of turning off crossplay, limiting the matchmaking pool to that console, whereas those on PC and Xbox are forced to match against each other. Crossplay is enabled by default, and some have stated that there was an option to disable it on Xbox in MW2's beta, so it's likely that Infinity Ward will patch the issue eventually.
Modern Warfare 2 - Why Some Xbox & PC Players Want To Avoid Crossplay
Some players prefer not to enter crossplay in FPS games due to the advantages and disadvantages posed by controllers and mouse-and-keyboard set-ups. Some PC s prefer to not play in lobbies with console gamers due to the presence of aim assist, while Call of Duty cheat makers typically thrive on PC versions of titles. This can make console players apprehensive to enter the PC pool in addition to the advantages given by players using a mouse and keyboard and not a controller. It is worth noting, however, that aim assist in Modern Warfare 2 has been criticized for giving console players an advantage of their own, so it's really up to interpretation as to who benefits or loses the most from crossplay lobbies.
Despite the debate over who has the biggest unfair advantage in Modern Warfare 2's crossplay lobbies, it is surprising that this feature hasn't been included for Xbox and PC players specifically. While likely a mistake that will be addressed, the fact that PlayStation CoD players and not Xbox or PC owners are already receiving unique benefits in the form of XP boosts and further loadout options make the optics of this omission unfortunate. PlayStation's players have a full choice of what kind of lobbies to search for, unlike their PC and Xbox cohorts, which isn't exactly fair.
Activision nor Infinity Ward have commented on the crossplay option, but with many reaching out on social media it's not unreasonable to assume the issue may be solved soon. Regardless of that aspect, many do seem satisfied overall with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2's campaign, graphics, and available multiplayer modes. With teases for zombies and the revamped Warzone 2 map also releasing soon, one would think that the game will overcome its launch-period troubles in the coming weeks.
