Even though many tv series tend to focus on romantic relationships, friendships play a significant role in a character's journey - and sometimes, a more important one than romantic love. Every once in a while, such important bonds are formed between the unlikeliest of pairings.
10 Most Unlikely Friendships From Riverdale
Shows like The Vampire Diaries and so many more have utilized the well-known enemies-to-friends trope before. From learning how to co-lead in a post-apocalyptic world to simply appreciating the opponent's wit, there's a lot that a character can learn from their nemesis. Sometimes greatest enemies can become life-long friends.
Clarke And Bellamy, The 100
Due to their headstrong personalities, Clarke and Bellamy clashed as soon as they met. The fact that Bellamy despised Clarke for the privilege she had been accustomed to in the Ark didn't help, either. Despite this, the fourth episode of season one saw them work together for the first time, which helped their friendship-slash-partnership begin.
Clarke would've been lost without Bellamy—he often ed her through the hardest decisions, indicating that the two were better off as a team than enemies. Clarke and Bellamy's friendship is the most bittersweet element of the show. In season seven, afraid that their differences would destroy everything she's worked for, Clarke ultimately took Bellamy's life.
Clary And Alec, Shadowhunters
Alec despised Clary from the moment he saw her. Her lack of discipline challenged everything he had always lived by. Falling victim to unrequited love, Alec's envy for the affection Clary shared with his best friend Jace throughout the first season was yet another interesting factor that shaped their dynamic.
Once Magnus entered Alec's life and helped him get rid of his insecurities, Alec's judgment wasn't influenced by jealousy anymore. The second half of season two saw Clary and Alec starting to get along. Alec realized how selfless and caring Clary is after she used her only wish to bring Jace back to life. Their shared love for Jace united Clary and Alec until the end.
Bonnie And Damon, The Vampire Diaries
Although it took them about three seasons to get along in the first place, Bonnie and Damon's friendship peaked during season 6. Stuck in the Prison World for four months, they've become each other's system; even if it meant that Damon would lose Elena for over half a century just to save Bonnie later on.
Both of them have benefitted from their friendship, especially Bonnie. She learned to dismantle all prejudice she had against vampires in the first season, which was the initial and main reason for her bitterness towards Damon. Reflective of their characters' growth during the show, Kat Graham and Ian Somerhalder, allegedly, hated each other during the filming of season one but are life-long friends now.
Nadia And Lu, Elite
Nadia and Lu's friendship was surprising but not unbelievable. They would argue all the time, from fighting over a guy in season one to competing for a scholarship in season three. Though Lu loses the former anyways, Nadia decides to split it between them, cementing their newfound friendship. In the last episode of season three, one of the most beautiful scenes of the show, Nadia's parents offer Lu to be the family she can always come back to, should she need one.
Nadia and Lu's bond is very similar to a sister-sister relationship. And, as they both board the plane to start their new life in New York together, it's clear they'll stay close no matter what.
Katara And Zuko, Avatar: The Last Airbender
As someone who lost her mother during a Fire Nation raid and had to save the Avatar from Zuko on multiple occasions, Katara had every right to disapprove of him. While imprisoned in the Crystal Catacombs, Zuko opened up to Katara about losing his mother to the Fire Nation; unfortunately, this sincere moment of redemption was destroyed when he betrayed Katara later on.
Through the trials and tribulations of trying to regain Katara's trust, Zuko has changed for the better, starting a new page of what would soon become a noble and beautiful companionship between him and Katara, this time lasting until the end.
Astrid And Payton, The Politician
Payton and Astrid's rivalry was a question of their environment rather than an actual clash of two personalities because they weren't so different after all. Being two enthusiastic yet megalomaniac students battling it out for the title of the next student body president, the two of them only cared about winning, no matter what.
Payton and Astrid's friendship was established in season two, through a challenge that required both of them to work together; in hopes of unseating New York State Senator Dede Standish, they learned quite a lot from each other. Should season three eventually happen, their bond would definitely improve, especially if they continued to work together.
Raven And Murphy, The 100
Murphy certainly wasn't everyone's favorite, often acting out on people that did not seem to care for him. Above all, he was the one who shot Raven in season one, negatively affecting her mobility for the foreseeable future. Even so, Raven's altruistic self saw right through Murphy's angst, especially after Murphy opened up to her after his unfortunate childhood in season two.
Since then, the two have grown to respect each other. With many ups and downs solidifying their bond, Raven finally forgave Murphy in the second half of season four. Having previously been misunderstood by almost everyone, Raven's kindness helped Murphy become a better person and an important member of the team until the end.
Merlin And Arthur, Merlin
In the beginning, Merlin and Arthur got off on the wrong foot, resulting in a physical fight between them. However, in the first-ever episode of the show, Merlin saved Arthur's life, kick-starting the respect they would gradually develop later. Being two sides of the same coin, they've made many sacrifices for each other, becoming better people themselves in the process.
Though tragic events put their friendship to an end in the last season, Kilgharrah suggested that there would come a time where Arthur and Merlin would reunite again. Should that happen, Merlin wouldn't have to hide his powers anymore and it'd make their quests even more exciting.
Melanie And Layton, Snowpiercer
Layton's disapproval of Melanie stemmed from vengeance—she had doomed him and his people for misery. As soon as Layton realized that Melanie never had any malicious intentions but rather a distorted idea of what must be done to save humanity, he started seeing her through a more positive lens. Her ing the train's control down to Layton in episode 9 of the first season cemented that.
Their friendship blossomed rapidly after, and they started seeing each other as equals. Having created a strong bond, Melanie's death in the finale of season two certainly affected Layton. It'll be interesting to see how he's going to cope with it in season three.
Clarke And Lexa, The 100
Clarke couldn't escape making enemies wherever she turned. Heavy is the head that wears the crown, after all. One of the most significant enemies-to-friends (and, in this instance, lovers later on) storylines of this show would not exist without the introduction of Lexa, yet another powerful leader, in season two.
Clarke and Lexa's story stole the hearts of the fans immediately, and rightfully so. In the end, they were just two commanders that shared one mission, which was to fight for their own. That's why they needed each other—to unite their people instead of going to war. It's a great shame that unfortunate incidents intervened in their affair.
