While you make a few good points regarding Aslan's mane, you're missing the main point, (no pun intended). Aslan represents Jesus Christ, who came into humanity as a male, died a humiliating cruel death, and rose to life again, defeating death and hell. If the gender of the Christ figure is changed, not only is it offensive, but it changes the intention of the author.
