Newly revealed screenshots for one version of the game was scrapped during development when it was over 60% complete, with the producer feeling it just wasn’t scary enough. During the subsequent redesign it was decided that a stronger connection was needed to the first game, so the original co-protagonist Elza Walker was scrapped and replaced with Claire Redfield, sister of Chris.
Claire has since become a series icon, appearing subsequent titles like Resident Evil: Code - Veronica and Revelations 2, in addition to being featured in 3 of the 6 live action movies. Resident Evil 2 is considered by many to be theE3 2018, and while it will revisit familiar locations and scenarios, the game will offer up many surprises for seasoned vets too.

Naturally, Leon and Claire will once again be the lead characters in Resident Evil 2, and they’ll each have a separate playable campaign. So far gameplay footage for the game have focused on Leon’s scenario, but new screenshots from Gamescom (via IGN) showcase Claire’s campaign.

The screenshots show Claire protecting Sherry Birkin once again, facing off against the mutated William Birkin and corrupt police chief Brian Irons and brandishing her famous grenade launcher. In the original Resident Evil 2, Claire’s M79 launcher could fire different grenade types, including acid and fire rounds. Since the remake will let players craft their own ammunition, it feels like a safe bet some experimentation will be allowed with this weapon.

Resident Evil 2 is ticking most of the boxes fans asked of it, and if does well, Capcom have teased they’re thinking of further remakes. While nothing is confirmed right now, Resident Evil 3: Nemesis is another title aficionados of the franchise would like to see a modern update of.
