The demo for Resident Evil 8 is viewed from the perspective of "the maiden," who starts out trapped in a dungeon cell. Thankfully, a stranger has left behind a note detailing how to escape from the dungeons. Although it's never explicitly said who left the note behind, there's plenty of evidence to help players work out their own theories.

The demo for Resident Evil Village takes place in Dimitrescu Castle, a lavish abode that serves as one of the two main locales in the game. Before reaching the inside of the castle, though, players begin their escape inside a dungeon cell. A quick search around will reveal a note which details how to escape. It's very helpful, but there's no signature or anything to let players know who's trying to help them.

Has some Resident Evil hero like Chris Redfield left the note behind? Or perhaps Lady Dimitrescu or one of her daughters are playing a clever game of cat-and-mouse? These are just some of the questions players may be asking themselves as they escape the dungeons and enter the main floors of Dimtrescu Castle. However, there's evidence around the castle that suggests the note was left behind by another maiden.

Why Another Maiden Left The Note In The Cell In RE8's Demo

Lady D Resident Evil 8 Reflection

Not long after escaping the dungeons in the Resident Evil 8 demo, players can find a note suggesting Lady Dimitrescu and her daughters hold maidens prisoner and then use their blood as a secret ingredient to their high-end wine, Sanguis Virginis ("maiden's blood"). A while later, players discover bloodstains on the ground floor, signs of a struggle, and clothes "just like the ones" the player-controlled maiden is wearing. These clothes are burning up in the fireplace, suggesting another maiden was killed, dragged away, and now her clothes are being destroyed.

Based on all this evidence, it seems the most likely answer is that this other maiden left the note behind in the cell. She managed to escape, was discovered, and then killed for her transgressions against the Dimitrescu family. Even now, perhaps her blood is being added to the latest batch of Sanguis Virginis. Moments later in RE8's demo, the player-controlled maiden is caught by Lady Dimitrescu and seemingly killed, apparently meeting the same fate as the maiden who left the note in the cell.

None of these answers are explicitly stated in the demo for Resident Evil 8, but the evidence does seem to suggest this is the case. A previous maiden figured out a way to escape from her cell, and left behind a note and helpful tools for any future maidens to find, knowing that Lady Dimitrescu and her daughters would continue imprisoning maidens for their wine-making. It's certainly an insidious plot, and it's one that should be explained further when Resident Evil Village releases in May.
