Some new rumors have surfaced for Resident Evil 9, sharing more information about the game's protagonists, setting, and story. Resident Evil 9 was officially announced to be in development in July 2024, but Konami has been quiet about the game since then, offering no new information or release window for the game. A new leak has surfaced that, if true, may give fans a sneak preview of what's to come.
Series darlings Jill Valentine and Leon S. Kennedy will be returning to the title as dual protagonists in Resident Evil 9, according to RinoTheBouncer on X, who received insider information about the game. Additional information from the rumor indicates that the game will take place four years after Resident Evil: Village, and will follow Jill and Leon as they investigate an island where a nefarious corporation is creating clones of Eveline, the villain of Resident Evil 7 and Village.

Other Familiar Names May Be Returning
According to the leak, Jill and Leon will be aided by Chris Redfield and Barry Burton over radio calls as they explore different parts of the island. Their investigations will take them to various locations, including an abandoned hospital, a factory, some houses, caves, a dark forest, a laboratory, and a temple of some sort. The story will focus on uncovering more information about the Megamycete and the company that's creating clones of Eveline using it.

Should Resident Evil 9 focus on Mia Winters or an original franchise character?
Following Koshi Nakanishi's confirmation that he would be returning for Resident Evil 9 this past July, fans have been clamoring for more information on the sequel, namely who will be the protagonist after Ethan Winters' death in Village. Considering the game set up a powered Rose to carry on the story, as well as a potentially revived Ethan, I do think Rose will likely be the protagonist for the next game, though personally, I would almost prefer to see a new game focused on Chris to catch us up on what's been going on with him since RE6. His sudden appearance in the final act of Biohazard and nearly villainous turn in Village really left me wondering why the creative minds took such a drastic shift with him, and a midquel being centered on a particularly dark mission would go a long way to helping give me some semblance of closure and understanding for this development.
Along the way, the duo will face up against an enemy called Mr. Simon, and become infected with the Megamycete themselves. The game will also feature a slew of enemies to overcome, including evolved zombies and strange enemies who worship and sing to the moon. The perpetual Stalker enemy will also return, with Leon constantly running from an enemy and Jill being attacked by the Goatman.
Our Take: We Hope Resident Evil 9 Returns To Third-Person Perspective
The Series Has Used Both First- and Third-Person Perspective
Despite all the information revealed in this leak, the one question that fans kept coming back to was whether the game would be in first- or third-person perspective. The original Resident Evil games were played from a third-person perspective, placing the camera in a fixed spot over the character's shoulder. Starting in Resident Evil 7, though, the camera shifted into a first-person perspective, putting players in the shoes of the character they were playing.
This change was controversial, with some players preferring the first-person POV for a more immersive experience, and others preferring the third-person POV because it gives a better overview of what's happening to the character. There's no word yet on whether the series will make a return to third-person perspective in RE9.
As always, it's important to that this isn't an official reveal from Konami, and leaks aren't always correct. That said, if this leak is true, then it sounds like Resident Evil 9 may be returning to its roots, revisiting familiar characters and villains from the series.
