Severance season 1 ended with the Innies free beyond their workplace, learning about the lives of their Outies in the process. However, after Mark (Adam Scott) accidentally calls Harmony (Patricia Arquette) "Mrs. Selvig," her name inside the company, the workers are caught having escaped beyond the boundaries of the company.

Speaking with Vanity Fair, Erickson explained how Severance season 2 will tackle the consequences of Mark and the other Innies getting out when they weren't supposed to. Teasing a "darker" storyline, the creator explained how there would be major repercussions for what they did, emphasizing how "the fallout is dire" from their insubordinate actions. However, he doesn't give anything specific away, making the show's continuation still a mystery surrounding where its story will go. Check out what Erickson had to say below:

I think things get darker. We very much wanted to put our heroes in a scarier place because season one ends with them poking the bear. They form this little rebellion, and they’re able to achieve a modicum of success with it, but the question with season two was: What happens when the bear pokes back? What’s the fallout of this victory that they had? I think, without giving much away, the fallout is dire.

What Erickson's Cryptic Hint Means For Severance Season 2

The Innies Are Going To Be Punished

Erickson's tease indicates Severance season 2 will include a major reaction from Lumon regarding the Innies managing to leave the company. Since they've grown restless with their jobs and now have knowledge of who they are in the outside world, the corporation could take drastic measures to ensure they aren't able to leave again. While the creator isn't specific about what this could involve, the 10-episode season has plenty of time to explore the consequences, potentially involving how much control the group will actually lose trying to gain freedom.

Where Are Helly, Dylan & Irving In Severance Season 2? Why Mark Has New Coworkers At Lumon

The new trailer for Severance season 2 shows Mark's coworkers at Lumon have been replaced, raising questions over what happened to them.

Since one new image of season 2 shows the main characters of Severance standing together outside the office, their punishment could be more than just getting forced to stay inside. However, the trailer also revealed Mark getting new coworkers, which could signal whatever the group's punishment will be. While it could also be as simple as their memories getting toyed with to keep them from recalling what happened, something so simplistic couldn't guarantee they'd remain docile forever. Whatever is next has to emphasize why they shouldn't try to run again.

Our Take On Erickson's Severance Season 2 Hints

Whatever Happens Will Likely Be Very Unexpected

Adam Scott looking worried as Mark in Severance season 2

Since the Severance season 2 trailer indicates Mark will return to the office with his memories of the outside world intact, the punishment Lumon drums up will no doubt be unexpected. This could mean episodes will go by without the whole group together, the protagonist trying to work out where everyone might be following season 1's breakout. With just one month left until answers are revealed, it seems Erickson will be waiting to unveil more about the consequences.

Severance season 2 will begin on Apple TV+ on January 17, 2025.
