It's one of the later offerings from Cartoon Network and has a surprisingly large fan base, off the back of its thematic episodes, full of ive messages about family and narratives from folklore. The show's deeper meaning will also make it a more interesting show for older audiences to delve into. Much like shows like Gravity Falls, it is a show about mysteries and young kids who have to deal with all the secrets and dangers around every corner.

It's fair to say that Rick and Morty certainly isn't a show aimed at kids yet it is one of the most popular animated series on television and one that has similar vibes to Gravity Falls. The show follows an unhinged and reckless mad scientist who drags his anxious grandson along on his wild and extremely dangerous adventures into the unknowns of inter-dimensional reality.

With plenty of jokes that break the fourth wall and even a lot of meta-commentary on the science fiction genre in general, new viewers are in for a wild ride of twists and turns, with surprisingly deep philosophical messages. This is a lot more raunchy and adult-oriented than most shows like Gravity Falls, but for something smart in animation, it hits all the marks. The show continues to delight its ionate fanbase with season 8 on the horizon.

Rick and Morty creator Justin Roiland's Hulu series Solar Opposites is another take on the sci-fi genre that is also not appropriate for all ages but deals with some hilarious and clever genre concepts. The series follows a group of aliens who find themselves escaping their home planet to make a new life on Earth. However, they soon find themselves disagreeing on where the way humanity lives is truly better than their old ways.

In many ways, some of the character tropes take their cues from figures from shows like Gravity Falls. It is also a fascinating way to explore the faults of humanity in a humorous way with endless material for the show. While Solar Opposites lost Roiland as a creator, the show still maintains the same smart humor and intelligent situations that made both it and Gravity Falls so popular for so many years.

Another series that shows there is plenty of acclaim to be found for animated shows, Phineas and Ferb won a Daytime Emmy Award in 2010 for Outstanding Writing in Animation, and won several Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation. The two brothers, Phineas and Ferb, have always been causing chaos with their school friends. Their pet platypus, Perry, is a secret agent and their sister is always trying to get them into trouble for their mad schemes.

From the fact that the show centers on two adventurous siblings to the fact that it takes place during their summer vacation day, it's fair to say that this is perhaps one of the closest shows to Gravity Falls, in of style and plot. It's completely off the wall in many ways, with the boys going from building a roller-coaster in their garden to singing about aglets. From the songs to the jokes for all ages, this is a modern classic.
