Supernatural, The CW decided to follow the Winchester story back in time and take a closer look at the people who raised Sam and Dean. John Winchester and Mary Campbell may have brought the world's greatest monster hunters into the world, but they also had independent lives before meeting one another.

In The Winchesters season 1, episode 3, "You're Lost Little Girl," the team investigates the disappearance of a young girl that Mary has a personal connection with. At the scene, John and Mary meet Betty, a police officer who clearly has a past with John. Later on in the episode, Betty returns an engagement ring John had apparently given her before being shipped out to fight in Vietnam. At first, it looks like John kept even more secrets from the boys than appeared in Supernatural.

Did Sam & Dean Know Their Dad Was Engaged Before Mary?

John and Betty clearly had a relationship before Mary was in the picture, but from the conversation where Betty returns the ring, they probably weren't engaged. After receiving the ring back from Betty, John says "You made the right call. We were too young, I was moving too fast." It's clear that the proposal did not go according to plan. Their relationship may have had a complicated ending for Betty to end up holding on to the ring, but it doesn't appear that Betty accepted John's proposal before he had to start his military service.

How long exactly they were dating is unclear, but John's mother also revealed that John was gone for two years prior to the beginning of the series which is set in 1972, which means john was just 16 or 17 before he left and presumably when he proposed. With the secretive nature of the Winchester family and the youthful nature of his and Betty's relationship, it's unlikely John would have shared details with Sam and Dean. Especially as much of his time was spent away trying to avenge their mother.

According to The Winchesters showrunner, Robbie Thompson in an interview with such as the Akrida, or if she ends up a casualty in the hunter's war against evil remains to be seen.
