Summary

  • Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki may be discussing a new Supernatural project, potentially focusing on Sam Winchester's life after the series finale, where he balances hunting with his personal life.
  • Another possibility for a new Supernatural project is a focus on Dean Winchester Jr.'s life as a hunter, keeping the Winchester family involved and potentially bringing back characters through flashbacks or visits to Heaven.
  • The idea of a Wayward Sisters spin-off, featuring the powerful female characters from Supernatural, makes sense and could bring a fresh perspective with an all-female main cast, while still allowing Dean and Sam to make guest appearances.

Supernatural is a titan in the dark fantasy-horror TV genre, and it looks like main stars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki might be interested in continuing the story. The series premiered in 2005 on The CW, and aired for 15 seasons, becoming the longest-running show on the network. The monster-hunting show has gathered an impressive fanbase throughout its run, and it looks like Ackles and Padalecki are still interested in reprising their roles as Dean and Sam Winchester.

Following the conclusion of Supernatural's final season, The CW tried to keep the franchise alive via The Winchesters. However, the spinoff wasn't able to make it past season 1. That seemed to end the Supernatural franchise altogether, but based on comments from the two stars, that may not be the case. Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki teased a new Supernatural project at the 2023 Creation Honolulu convention, and here are some of the possibilities that the two might be discussing.

Supernatural’s Best Episodes Prove The Show Was Strongest When Using 1 Type Of Storytelling

Over Supernatural's 15 seasons, it's included some unusual and memorable moments. Its best episodes reveal it's strongest with 1 type of storytelling.

9 Sam Winchester's Life After Supernatural

Sam continued hunting as a lone wolf

Jared Padalecki as Old Sam Winchester in Supernatural

The Supernatural series finale's ending clears up what happens to Sam Winchester's life after Dean dies, but there are numerous ways the show could return with Jared Padalecki's Sam as the lead again. Following Dean's demise, Sam returned to hunting, but he finally managed to balance his personal life with his hunting duties. Although the pandemic prevented all the characters from coming back, Sam got married, presumably to Eileen (Shoshannah Stern), whom he dated in the series' final season, and had a kid.

Although a Sam-centric series would probably not be as successful without Dean, given that Ackles and Padalecki's acting and chemistry kept the show going for 15 seasons, it could solve something Supernatural never did. Hunting had never been Sam's dream, and a new revival could finally give Sam the life he'd always wanted. A show focused on Sam Winchester's life after Supernatural could also prove that, if Sam and Dean had truly wanted it, they would have put hunting in second place and managed to have a family and grow old.

8 Dean Winchester Jr.'s Life As A Hunter

Hunting was always a family business

Spencer Borgeson as Dean Jr. Jared Padalecki as Sam Winchester and Jensen Ackles as Dean in Supernatural

Following Dean's death in the final episode of Supernatural, Sam kept his promise and never tried to revive him. Instead, he lived his life had a son named after his fallen brother, and, based on older Dean Winchester Jr.'s tattoo, it's safe to assume Sam taught him the family business. A new Supernatural show could focus on Dean Jr.'s life as a hunter. It would keep Supernatural involved in the Winchester family, with Sam still present as a mentor figure. Given that it's Supernatural, there might even be a way to get Dean involved in the show, either in flashbacks or visits to or from Heaven. That way, the Dean Jr.-focused series could show what the Winchester brothers' lives could have been if John Winchester (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) had been truly in their lives and ed them.

7 Dean Winchester Travels Through The Afterlife

The possibilities of the new heaven are endless

Dean Winchester Driving the Impala and Smiling in Heaven Season 15 of Supernatural

Dean's death in the final episode was disappointing, yet not surprising. Supernatural was never going to give Dean a happy ending with a family. Unlike Sam, Dean dying was always in the cards, especially since the last season revealed that it was Chuck/God keeping the Winchesters from harm. However, Dean going to Heaven might be a way to keep Supernatural alive. When Dean arrived in Heaven, he was reunited with Bobby, with the promise of more fallen characters around, including fan-favorite angel Castiel. Unlike a Sam-centric show, a series with Dean in Heaven has endless possibilities of bringing back characters and even having Dean protect Heaven from unknown dangers.

6 A Wayward Sisters Revival

One of the most anticipated spin-offs

A blended image featuring the 5 Supernatural spinoff characters for Wayward Sisters: Jody Mills (Kim Rhodes), Donna (Briana Buckmaster), Claire (Kathryn Newton), Alex (Katherine Ramdeen), Kaia (Yadira Guevara-Prip), and Patience (Clark Backo)

Supernatural was mainly a male-character-driven series, but it had its fair share of amazing, powerful women. Five of them became so loved that talk about a Wayward Sisters spin-off started, yet never materialized. The show would potentially include Kim Rhodes as Jody Mills, Briana Buckmaster's Donna, Kathryn Newton as Claire, Katherine Ramdeen's Alex, Yadira Guevara-Prip as Kaia, and Clark Backo as Patience.

A Wayward Sister revival might make a lot more sense than continuing the story of Supernatural. First, it would take characters that are already part of the Supernatural universe and have acquired their own fanbase. Second, it would give a needed fresh perspective with an all-female main cast. The idea was attempted in season 13 as a backdoor pilot, but the series was not picked up. Even so, the concept still makes sense. Dean and Sam could still be a part of the show with guest appearances, allowing them to focus on other projects while Supernatural goes on in a new direction.

Following the end of Supernatural, Jensen Ackles was involved in another Supernatural show: The Winchesters. He acted as a narrator, reprised his role as Dean, and was also an executive producer. Unfortunately, The Winchesters, following Dean and Sam's parents Mary (Meg Donnelly) and John (Drake Rodger) when they were young, was not successful and was subsequently canceled. The actors tried to get another network to pick it up, yet the efforts led nowhere. Ackles and Padalecki continuing the efforts to bring back The Winchesters is plausible, even though the show was not as beloved as the original.

4 A Supernatural Alternate Universe

Where Dean and Sam could have done things differently

Supernatural has taken Sam, Dean, and the other characters on multiple journeys. Although Supernatural has wrapped the stories, it could bring Sam and Dean to an alternate universe. There, they could continue to fight the good fight, but also see how their lives could've turned out if things had been different. What if Mary (Samantha Smith) hadn't died and she and John (Morgan) were still alive and fighting demons? What if Sam had married Jessica (Adrianne Palicki) and become a lawyer, but still fought demons? It shouldn't show young Dean and Sam, but their characters at the ages of season 15, and go on from there.

3 Supernatural Season 16

The Supernatural Family applies both on-and-off screen

The most logical answer to Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki's new project is Supernatural season 16. Although the two had fought all the evil there was to fight, there was no shortage of monsters, and Dean and Sam could still get back out there. With that in mind, Sam already had a long life, and the show ended with the two in heaven, so it should go from there to avoid denying the events of the series finale. The two have been revived so many times throughout the series and, since many cast have shared their desire to come back, they could find a plausible way to continue Supernatural.

2 Supernatural Movie Sequels

Continue the story with films every few years

The cast loved working on Supernatural, which is why the show went on for 15 seasons. However, most of the actors are now involved in other projects. Ackles is working on The Boys, Padalecki has his Walker series, and they are no longer available to shoot 20+ episodes for a season. However, given their limited time, Ackles and Padalecki could be discussing possible movie sequels. Both stars have addressed the possibility in the past, and this worked for other shows, including Psych, which continued the story with movies released every few years. Supernatural could do the same, with each movie focused on a single storyline that can be wrapped up within two hours.

1 Supernatural Original Finale

The COVID-19 improvised finale didn't cut it

Sam and Dean in Heaven in Supernatural

The fantasy/horror series had a big legacy to live up to in its series finale, and the Supernatural ending had some big problems. Ackles and Padalecki could fix that with a revival episode, movie, or even miniseries that could give the Winchesters the ending they deserve. Originally, the ending would've been completely different, but it couldn't be done because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The original finale was supposed to bring back other fan-favorite fallen characters to greet Dean in Heaven, and even the iconic band Kansas, who performed the series' trademark song, "Carry On My Wayward Son." With a new short revival, Supernatural could give beloved characters a proper send-off.
