  • I guess that I am just not much of a Kaiju fan without a strong human element present. Pacific Rim is gorgeous to look at and I love the weight to everything, but I found myself bored out of my mind a handful of times during this movie. Never watched the sequel.

  • As an anime fan, it's always funny to me to see American audiences get excited for something that I've seen a hundred times already. Guillermo is a master, but this is not one of his top films.

  • One of my favorite movies of all time. I don't know what it is about it, but it just feels so special and I always get so excited watching it. The action is incredible and I spending weeks as a kid imagining what Jaeger I would pilot. It's definitely an action film, but the deep dive into human connections is what gives the movie actual substance. I'm not even a major fan of Kaiju media like that, but Pacific Rim makes the battle scenes beautiful to look at.

  • Legendary was banking on some serious Transformers magic, but Pacific Rim wound up being just another generic flop. With Guillermo del Toro's 100th "giant monster," they could've had something here if the story focused more on human character and interpersonal relationships, which had so much better chemistry between the Jaegers and Kaiju. Unfortunately, it just made me want to rewatch the 1999 cinematic masterpiece The Iron Giant.

Synopsis

In a post-apocalyptic future, Earth battles a deadly race of alien monsters called the Kaiju, who have begun arriving on the planet through an interdimensional portal in the Pacific Ocean. In an attempt to combat the Kaiju, humanity has created Jaegers, giant robot suits powered by at least two pilots that can match their enemy for size and strength. When the Kaiju begin to become too strong, however, a washed-up Jaeger pilot must return to the program to participate in one final mission to save Earth for good.
