  • The disappointing end to the Cornetto Trilogy, Edgar Wright's misunderstood peon to man-children is a little too sad to ever be genuinely funny, and strays too far from genre convention to feel like a loving pastiche in the same way as Hot Fuzz or Shaun of the Dead.

  • In a trilogy of all-time-great movies, The Worlds End often feels overshadowed by its predecessors. While it may lack the grit and more hands-on feelings that Wright's earlier films had with his greater Hollywood recognition and have the sheen and flair of Hollywood productions, the charm and humor that made Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz so quotable and clever is still there. What The World's End does bring is a more mature story, as while its predecessors asked their protagonists to sort their lives out and break out of toxic cycles, the emotional arc of the third movie asks whether you should go back if you get the chance, and treats the question with incredible nuance, making Gary perhaps Pegg's most strongly developed character. With all this and action assembled by some of Hollywood's best, The World's End is a perfect final note for the Cornetto Trilogy.

  • The sci-fi plot isn't quite here on this entry in the Cornetto Trilogy, but that doesn't mean it's not a fun romp. Edgar Wright works with his usual stable of Brits as a band of middle-aged men reunite for the pub crawl they couldn't complete as teens. Maybe it's a letdown because it's the third and final film, maybe because some really heavy themes were blended with gooey alien people, but being the worst Edgar Wright film is still a very high honor.
