After being spared by Hub, Lilith possesses a crow and flies away before Hub can reconsider his decision. In the meantime, Maryanne feels betrayed by Lucky and Hub for breaking her trust and taking her kindness for granted. Midge had previously revealed that Lilith was once god's favorite angel because of her beautiful voice. However, the other angels eventually grew jealous of her and tricked her into ing forces with Satan. As a result, she was banished to hell and forced to live without the one thing she truly loved: music.

Just like Lilith was let down by the men in her life, Maryanne, too, was betrayed and lied to by the two men she trusted: Lucky and Hub.

After being tortured by Satan in hell, Lilith took it upon herself to escape to the human realm. During her time in hell, she also developed a deep-seated hatred towards men because of how the devil treated her. Owing to this, she developed mind-control abilities that allow her to make women her devotees and force men to kill themselves by ripping off their jaws. Just like Lilith was let down by the men in her life, Maryanne, too, was betrayed and lied to by the two men she trusted: Lucky and Hub.

Therefore, towards the end of The Bondsman, it seems like a part of Lilith empathizes with Maryanne and understands what she has gone through. By possessing her, she gives her the power to finally take control over her life. Maryanne is also an accomplished singer and is revealed to have an incredible voice. This allows Lilith to embrace her knack for music. More than anything else, possessing Maryanne also helps Lilith gain control over Hub, who had almost managed to trap and kill her before she turned things around with her deal.

Hub's Deal With Lilith Explained

Hub Sells The World To Save Himself

Kevin Bacon's Hub sets out to fulfill his responsibility of sending Lilith back to hell. Even though she proves to be an overpowered demon, he comes up with a brilliant plan to trap her and send her back to hell. However, things take a turn when Lilith heals him and promises to keep Sheryl alive in exchange for her freedom. Lilith also assures him that she will upturn his deal with the devil and help him avoid his hellish fate if he agrees to spare her.

The Bondsman was primarily filmed in Grantville, Georgia.

Driven by selfishness, Hub accepts the deal and agrees to spare her. With this, Lilith possesses a crow and flees while Sheryl remains alive. With his deal, Hub manages to save himself from going to hell and even manages to revive Sheryl. However, he does all this at a terrible cost: he sells the rest of the entire human realm to Lilith in exchange for his own salvation. He does not realize the consequences of what he has done and celebrates his newfound freedom from the devil until Lilith takes hold of Maryanne in The Bondsman's ending and threatens to harm the entire world.

In The Bondsman's closing moments, Lilith threatens Hub that if he does not help her in her fight against Satan, the entire human realm will face her fury. She also implies that she could kill Maryanne if Hub attempts to go against her. Lilith also claims that as much as Hub would like to believe he has overcome his hellish fate, the devil would not be happy about his deal with a demon like her. Once he learns the truth about what he has done, Satan might even show up in the human realm to set things straight and punish those who dared to defy him.

The Reverse Pentagram's Significance In The Bondsman Explained: How Hub Uses It To Trap Lilith

Hub Uses The Pentagram To Trap Lilith

While telling Hub about Lilith's history, Midge recalls how the demon was previously seen near an abbey in Jerusalem. She even shows him an artwork of the location, which helps Hub notice a pattern. Hub sees a pentagram right outside the Jerusalem abbey in the picture and deduces that it might be a trap set up for demons. He connects all the dots when he understands that all the demons he has hunted so far also represent the five edges of the pentagram: spirit, earth, water, air, and fire.

With this newfound insight, he sets up his best amplifier in the middle of nowhere and uses it to lure Lilith. When Lilith finally arrives and enters the area where the pentagram has been set up, Midge unveils the edges of the five-pointed star polygon. As a result, Lilith gets trapped and is forced to comply with Hub and Midge. This gives Hub the perfect opportunity to shoot her human host dead and send her back to hell. However, Lilith entices him with her deal and tricks him into setting her free.

Why Hub Was Sent To Hell

Hub Accidentally Murdered Sheryl

Almost throughout the Kevin Back Prime Video show's runtime, Hub claims that the devil made a mistake by sending him to hell. He denies that he committed any sins and claims to be innocent. However, towards the end of the series, it is revealed that Hub had planned to kill Lucky after getting drunk one night. Instead of killing Lucky, though, he mistook a bartender, Sheryl, for him because she was wearing his hat and accidentally killed her in his drunken rage.

...Capturing Lilith was Hub and Midge's final job for Pot O'Gold

Instead of accepting punishment for his crime, he even tried to cover up for it by hiding Sheryl's body. In The Bondsman's final arc, Lilith takes Sheryl's body as her host, which eventually helps her strike a deal with Hub. The Amazon Prime Video show's last episode establishes that capturing Lilith was Hub and Midge's final job for Pot O'Gold.

The devil was going to send the two characters to hell right after that. Midge still wanted to complete the job because she hoped to leave a better world behind for her son. Hub, however, hated how it was a lose-lose situation for them. Therefore, when he found the opportunity to turn his fate around, he took it, allowing Lilith to stay.

Midge's backstory in The Bondsman revealed that he was shattered when she learned her newborn son, Benji, had cancer. When she started looking for new means to raise funds for her son's treatment online, she came across an ad for an organization called Pot O'Gold. As soon as she clicked on the ad, a form automatically filled in all her details and signed her up with Pot O'Gold. The next day, a Pot O'Gold employee, Ali Khan, showed up at her door and revealed how her job was to collect souls for the devil.

He added that he gets some commission for every soul she manages to sign for the company, implying that Pot O'Gold follows a pyramid scheme. Realizing that working under Pot O'Gold would mean she would have to sell her soul to the devil and finalize her place in hell after death, Midge initially feels apprehensive. However, she eventually agrees for her son's sake and sets out to sign up more people to sell their souls to the demonic organization.

All the demons Hub faces in The Bondsman season 1:

  • Valacor
  • Marphos
  • Erdos
  • Slypharis
  • Pyralis
  • Lilith

Just like Ali Khan recruits Midge to Pot O'Gold, Midge does the same to Hub by offering him more time in the human realm. Unlike Midge, Hub is not hired as a recruiter. Instead, he is taken on board a demon hunter, likely because he was a bounty hunter before he died.

How The Bondsman Season 1's Ending Sets Up Season 2

Season 1 Ends With A Massive Cliffhanger

Jennifer Nettles in The Bondsman

The Bondsman's ending sets the stage for Lilith and Hub to forces to fight against Lucifer. Season 1 seems to hint at his future appearance but does not reveal much about his story in the show's overarching lore. Owing to this, if the series is renewed for another season, it would be interesting to see who will play Lucifer and how the show will portray his character.

Since the entire human race is in danger, The Bondsman might even introduce God as one of its characters in the next season. To keep things interesting, the show's season 2 will also likely add new demonic characters to the mix who might help the devil stop Hub and his crew from taking him down. Given how Hub manages to upturn his destiny and avoid going to hell, the devil might even try to find a way to enslave him or send him to hell in The Bondsman's season 2.
