Summary

  • The Craft theory claims Sarah was the only true witch in the coven.
  • Bonnie and Rochelle had no powers, so they relied on Sarah, who transferred them her magic.
  • Nancy could have drawn power from Manon or been a dark witch, but The Craft: Legacy debunks one of these options.

The Craft followed a coven’s struggles once their spells had negative repercussions on them, but a theory suggests only one of the coven’s was a true witch, and it wasn’t Nancy (Fairuza Balk). The 1990s were a great decade for horror with the resurgence of the slasher genre and teen-led movies, among them The Craft. Directed by Andrew Fleming, The Craft was a box office success but didn’t do so well with critics, who praised the performances of the main cast and Fleming’s direction but criticized its writing and too many horror clichés. Still, The Craft has since gained a cult following.

The Craft follows Sarah Bailey (Robin Tunney), a troubled girl who moves from San Francisco to Los Angeles with her father and stepmother. At school, she befriends three outcast girls – Nancy, Bonnie (Neve Campbell), and Rochelle (Rachel True) – who are convinced Sarah is the “fourth” they were looking for to complete their coven. Although their spells work, they have to deal with the consequences of them, and Nancy becomes seduced by all the power she can get. All of the coven had powers to some degree and got stronger when they were together, but only one of them might have been a true witch.

The Craft Theory Explains Sarah Was The Only True Witch

Sarah Was The Only One Born With Powers

Bonnie and Rochelle had no powers, which is why they needed Sarah in the coven and could only cast spells when she was present, as she would “transfer” power to them.

Bonnie, Rochelle, and Nancy worshiped the spells cast by the coven throughout The Craft. Because of this, Sarah might have been the only true witch in the coven.

Bonnie and Rochelle had no powers, which is why they needed Sarah in the coven and could only cast spells when she was present, as she would “transfer” power to them. Now, when it comes to Nancy, the theory can go two ways. One is that Nancy didn’t have powers either and she drew it all from Manon, thus becoming a chaos witch and that’s why it got out of her control in the final part of The Craft. The other possibility, as explained by a Reddit , is that Nancy was also a natural witch but a “dark” one.

At the end of the movie, Sarah and Nancy fight for control, with the latter now fueling Bonnie and Rochelle with her magic as they had sided with her.

Both Sarah and Nancy transferred power to Bonnie and Rochelle, and this is ed by the scene where Nancy helped Bonnie with the spell to get rid of her scars and Sarah helped Rochelle with the spell to make her bully’s hair fall out. At the end of the movie, Sarah and Nancy fought for control, with the latter fueling Bonnie and Rochelle with her magic as they had sided with her. Sarah successfully cast the binding spell against Nancy, leaving her “powerless”, while she retained her natural magic, and Bonnie and Rochelle were left with nothing as Sarah no longer transferred her magic to them.

The Craft Theory Makes Nancy A More Interesting Antagonist

Nancy Is Much Cooler & Terrifying Thanks To This Theory

Nancy looking surprised in The Craft

If she had no powers and drew it all from Manon, that shows how relentless she was and also how evil she could be.

From the beginning, Nancy was shown as the chaotic member of the coven as her main purpose was to become all-powerful, which she achieved, though at a high price – and no matter which version of the above theory is accepted, they both make Nancy a more interesting antagonist. If she had no powers and drew it all from Manon, that shows how relentless she was and also how evil she could be, as she went to great lengths to become as powerful as the deity she worshiped.

If Nancy was a “dark” witch, that would bring more balance to The Craft and also make Nancy’s presence more important in the movie. The Craft established that magic is about balance, which is why the girls had to deal with the consequences of their spells. Nancy being a “dark” witch also means that she would have had that dark turn no matter what as it was in her nature, but it makes her fate a lot sadder as it couldn’t have been avoided.

The Craft: Legacy Confirms One Nancy Theory (& Debunks The Other)

The Craft: Legacy Has A Surprising Turn That Involves Nancy

The cast of The Craft: Legacy

The Craft: Legacy had a twist in the revelation of Lily being adopted, and her mother was none other than Nancy.

In 2020, The Craft got the legacy sequel treatment with The Craft: Legacy. Directed by Zoe Lister-Jones, The Craft: Legacy followed teenage girls Frankie (Gideon Adlon), Tabby (Lovie Simone), and Lourdes (Zoey Luna) who befriended new girl Lily (Cailee Spaeny) and welcomed her as their “fourth” in their coven after witnessing her telekinetic abilities. The Craft: Legacy had a twist in the revelation of Lily being adopted, and her mother was none other than Nancy, who was still in a mental health hospital.

Nancy having a daughter with strong magical abilities debunks the version of the theory that says Nancy was powerless and drew her abilities from Manon, but confirms that Nancy was a natural witch, though whether a “dark” or “light” one can still be debated. It’s very possible that Bonnie and Rochelle didn’t have any natural magical abilities in The Craft and they needed Sarah and Nancy more than they needed them and the other.
