Spoiler alert: This article spoils parts of The Walking Dead's series finale. On Nov. 20, 2022, showrunners immediately teased the Rick-Michonne spinoff to follow. The series will reunite the couple, with the setup already made by the appearances in the final episode.
Fans still have many questions and hopes for Rick and Michonne, including clearing up Rick’s status with CRM how Michonne separated from the convoy she was a part of when the character was last seen. With a bit of a wait before the spinoff arrives, it’s worth recapping the most pressing questions in more detail.
At What Point In The Timeline Did Rick Write His Letter To Michonne?
Michonne’s discovery of Rick’s letter is the most important event for The Walking Dead spinoff because it set up the story of their reunion. While the finale made it appear as if Michonne and Rick’s letters were parallels to each other, the truth is that Rick’s scene took place much earlier.
What isn’t clear is exactly when. Michonne found Rick’s supplies on the boat a couple of years before the final episode, which places Rick’s scene in the finale a while before that. The spinoff should clarify when it was that Rick decided to leave clues of his survival.
What Happened To Michonne's Companions?
Michonne was given one of the best finale episodes for a Walking Dead character, where she was last seen aiding two survivors toward a massive convoy. It was apparent that Michonne had now taken these two people on as her companions, only for the finale to show her all alone.
With Michonne not only having new allies but coming across a huge group of survivors as well, it’s unclear how she ended up by herself once more. The spinoff should ideally pick up from where Michonne was seen helping her new companions so that viewers will know the events that led to her being alone in the finale scene.
For How Long Was Rick On The Run?
Rick was visibly frustrated when he was caught by the CRM helicopter in the finale, with this coming across as desperation as well. It seemed as if Rick had been on the run long enough for him to believe that he was finally free, which is why he had enough time to write the letter and create the sketch on the phone.
Of course, there’s also no way to tell exactly how Rick escaped and when that was either, as there was no indication if he’d indeed been free a substantial amount of time. The spinoff can fill in this gap by showing the circumstances of Rick’s escape and how long he’d been incarcerated before that.
What Are The Walker Variants Like In The Rest Of The Country?
The final season showed that walkers had evolved to a point where they were starting to think for themselves. This manifested in a way that walkers could now climb and even use weapons such as rocks. This raises the question of how they’ve been behaving in other places.
After all, not all walkers are the same, as other material of The Walking Dead has indicated. The spinoff can offer a glimpse into the state of the undead in the rest of the country since it’s supposed to be set in multiple places rather than just in Virgina as the main series.
Is There Another War That Michonne Is A Part Of?
There had to be something big that the convoy was escaping when Michonne saw it, as not much could threaten a group of survivors as large as the ones she came across. Furthermore, Michonne donning armor and keeping a horse handy indicated that she might be part of a conflict.
The spinoff has the task of answering what she’s been up to for more than a year since she must have had a purpose that kept her going rather than returning home. The series will need to explain how Michonne acquired her new materials and why she was so eager to charge into walker horde in the last scene.
What Is Rick's Status As A Prisoner?
Rick was traded to CRM by Jadis for being a “B,” which was supposed to save his life since an “A” was someone who was seemingly tested on by the group. However, it doesn’t seem as if a “B” status is all that great either considering Rick tried to escape CRM.
Since the scene in the finale is set earlier in the timeline, it raises the question of what Rick’s status as a prisoner is now. The spinoff series should also answer what being a “B” entailed in of Rick’s place at CRM, along with how his botched escape impacts his prisoner status now.
Who's The "He" From Whom Rick Tried To Escape?
There have been several promising characters that The Walking Dead ultimately wasted, but it would be a shame if the same happens to CRM. The person commandeering the helicopter reminded Rick that “he” told the protagonist that there’s no escape for the living.
The helicopter pilot’s words certainly sound ominous and the setup for an overarching villain. The spinoff has to answer who this person is and what the context of their statement is supposed to be. It would also offer more insight into what CRM’s ideals are since such a claim sounds extremely bleak.
How Has Rick's Psyche Changed Over The Years?
Rick had to endure a number of betrayals in the earlier Walking Dead seasons that changed him in the long-run, such as Shane’s attempts to kill him. Given that he's been away from his family and friends for a decade, fans will no doubt be wondering if the Rick they knew will show up in the spinoff.
The series should ideally answer this question straight off the bat to let viewers know what the tone of the story is going to be like. It will also have implications for his eventual reunion with Michonne since she will need to deal with the possibility of a drastic change in Rick’s personality after years of suffering at the hands of CRM.
