A prequel to Denzel Washington's Ethan Hawke as Jake Hoyt, an officer in line for a potential job in the LAPD narcotics division who is taken on an evaluation by Washington's Alonzo Harris. Jake quickly learns that Harris is a corrupt cop with a whole lot of demons in his closet, as his day becomes increasingly wild and dangerous.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua from a script by Bill Paxton and Justin Cornwell as completely new characters, but was canceled after one season following Paxton's tragic death.
As reported by Collider, Training Day is getting yet another look from Warner Bros., this time in prequel form. Nick Yarborough (who penned the Black List script A Letter from Rosemary Kennedy) has been tapped to write, with no director yet attached. The story reportedly follows Alonzo Harris ten years before the events of the original movie, at a time when Los Angeles was on-edge in the wake of the infamous Rodney King beating.
No actors are yet attached to the film either, but speculation will no doubt heat up about Washington's son The Irishman. Then again, de-aging actors for a handful of flashback scenes is one thing, but Washington would need to be de-aged by 30 years for the entirety of the Training Day prequel, which might be too much to ask.
Whoever ends up taking on the role of Alonzo Harris in the Training Day prequel will obviously have a huge legacy to live up to, as Washington's performance in the original movie is still regarded as one of his best, and Harris remains one of the great bad-cop characters in movie history. It will be fascinating to see what other details are revealed about the prequel in the coming months, and indeed it will be interesting to see who ultimately lands the role of Harris.
