Summary

  • Jared Leto teases his mysterious character in the blockbuster Tron: Ares with a dark red light suit and unique weapon.
  • The movie is the third installment in the Tron franchise, serving as a direct sequel to 2010's Legacy, starring Leto as Ares.
  • Directed by Joachim Rønning and set to release on December 19, 2025, the film promises to bring fans back to the Grid in an action-packed sci-fi adventure.

Jared Leto is suiting up for his next big blockbuster in the first ensemble Tron: Ares cast alongside Evan Peters, Greta Lee, Jodie Turner-Smith, Cameron Monaghan, Sarah Desjardins and Gillian Anderson.

Just over a month after production began on the project, Leto took to his Twitter to reveal the first look at his Tron: Ares character.

The image, as seen above, shows Leto's mysterious titular character, donning a dark red light suit standing in a similarly red area on the Grid. Leto's suit can also be seen featuring a unique weapon on his hip, seemingly different from the discs the franchise is best known for.

Leto's Ares Character Can Completely Flip The Tron Formula

Garrett Hedlund and Jeff Bridges as Sam and Flynn in Tron Legacy

The reveal of Leto's Tron: Ares character donning a red light suit marks an interesting change for the sci-fi franchise, given characters who wear said suit are typically on the antagonist side of the stories rather than the blue-suit-wearing protagonists of the first two movies. The confirmation that Ares will be a Program venturing into the real world indicates that he will start the movie as a villain, though it seems unlikely he'll remain as one.

With his previous role in the infamous Sony's Spider-Man Universe outing Morbius, Leto has shown his proclivity for more complex and antihero-skewing characters, making it possible that Ares will be the latest in this trend for the Oscar winner. It would also offer a nice change of pace for the Tron franchise as it explores a character who learns about the devious nature of the Programs on the Grid and seeks to create a more peaceful existence for all. This was a formula explored to much success with the Star Wars sequel trilogy in John Boyega's Stormtrooper-turned-Rebel Finn.

Ares also continues a great trick from Tron: Legacy.

By putting the focus on a Grid-born character, Tron: Ares also looks to be taking a page out of Legacy's playbook by setting up a heroic arc for a Program. Though the 2010 sequel largely revolved around a human transported into the Grid, Olivia Wilde's Quorra was an adept counterpart to the elder Flynn before journeying to the real world. With the plot details indicating this will be mankind's first A.I. encounter, it seems likely Quorra's ending is being retconned, though Ares becoming a hero after solely living in the Grid would mark a promising continuation of Tron: Legacy's best story trick.

The first two Tron movies are available to stream on Disney+.
