After Charlie, Berta is the soul of the show Two And A Half Men. She made sure each and every frame she was in gave way to a flood of laughter. The no-nonsense house help looked like an ordinary maid the first time she appeared on the show, but, little did anyone know, she would become a regular character and take a permanent place in the hearts of the fans.
Each line delivered by Berta is hilarious and in every frame she appeared in, her expressions added to the comedy quotient, even if she didn't have any dialogue. While Berta has mostly been a great addition to the show, a few times she was unusually overrated.
Overrated: Grab Me A Beer
In one of the episodes, Charlie asks Berta to hand him a beer, and Berta being Berta asks Jake to hand a beer to his uncle. Not only this, Berta even trained Jake to clean the toilet and floors.
Whenever the adults were not at home, she would tell Jake to clean up his own mess and give him other menial tasks. If Berta was a real housekeeper, she wouldn’t have even lasted a week.
Underrated: Her Scathing One-Liners
Berta, hands down, has the most cheeky and sarcastic one-liners on the show and many fans loved her for the sheer fact that she was always her true self.
In one of the episodes, Charlie started dating Lydia, a woman who was exactly similar to Evelyn in all ways, including her occupation, and Berta and Alan confronted him. Berta famously said, “The only difference between those two broads is you came outta one, and you …!”
Overrated: Some Privacy
In one episode, Evelyn was talking to Charlie about a sensitive topic and wanted Berta to give them some room. Charlie asked Berta to give them some privacy, to which Berta outrightly said "no."
Berta had an annoying habit of sticking her nose in where it didn't belong. Many fans appreciated this behavior and sang praises about Berta and how they would have loved to have her around in real life. This would perhaps be okay for a day or two, but no one would tolerate such nosey staff for the long term.
Underrated: Another Party Hat
It was Jake’s birthday and everyone gathered at Charlie’s Malibu house to celebrate, but Jake was not willing to come out of his room. When Alan asked him what’s up and why he was behaving weirdly, Jake told him that he took a few vitamin tablets from his medicine cabinet.
Alan said he didn’t have any vitamin tablets, to which Jake told him that he took the ones with the little Vs on them. The most hilarious quote of the show is when Berta said that the kid was going to need another party hat.
Overrated: No-Nonsense House Help
“I ain’t cleaning that up!” Berta ran the household in her own way. She didn't think of herself only as an employee and thought of the house and her chores as nobody’s business but hers. It was either her way or the highway.
She didn't like intrusions at all and if she was doing something, nobody could object or intervene. If things got dirty or messy and push came to shove, you could count on Berta to disappear out the back door. In spite of all this, Charlie overrated her as a very loyal friend.
Underrated: Berta Never Sugercoats Things
Out of all the characters throughout all the seasons in the show, Berta was the only character who never sugarcoated things. She called things out as they were and she didn't flinch when saying them to anyone's face, either.
When Charlie was dating Mia, he thought he really loved her and wanted her to be happy, so he stopped doing things that Mia didn't like, like going out, smoking, drinking, or wearing shorts, or almost anything that Charlie did. Berta pointed to him that he was whipped, right to his face.
Overrated: Non-Accommodating
Berta is the most non-accommodating and self-centered maid ever. She even quit a lucrative job (at Charlie’s) with a more than generous boss, just because she didn’t want to accommodate or handle Alan and Jake.
After Charlie’s supposed death, when Walden bought the house, he offered Berta to as an in-house maid on a permanent basis. She gladly accepted until she found out that Alan was staying behind, too. She then quit her permanent role again and, instead, ed as part-time help. She hated guests, for sure.
Underrated: The Best Roast Ever
There were many times when Berta made fun of others or hurled hilarious and cheeky one-liners at them and not even once could anyone shut her up throughout the series.
Each and every line by her was funny and the names she called other characters were quite innovative, for instance, Zippy. She never missed a beat and was one of the best characters in the show to shake things up!
Overrated: When Berta Quit
When Alan and Jake moved into Charlie’s house, Berta soon realized that Jake’s mess was not her cup of tea. She asked Charlie to choose one – either her or his family. She soon quit. After just a couple of days, Charlie and Alan felt the difference without her, so Alan went to Berta's house to appease her and get her to come back.
Alan could have just d in a few newspapers and could have got a much better housekeeper than her. It was a golden opportunity to get rid of her, minus the guilt of firing her, but, of course, the show wouldn’t have been the same.
Underrated: Without Berta
As established earlier, the show wouldn’t have been the same without Berta. Not only did she build up the premises for new jokes, but she also delivered a unique sense of humor which was reflected even when she didn't say or do anything.
Her expressions were hilarious all of the time and her comic timing was impeccable. Berta deserved her own spin-off show and fans bet it would be awesome.
