Rick Grimes and the rest of the survivors took refuge on the Greene family farm. Beth wasn't mentally equipped for the post-apocalyptic world, nearly committing suicide after coming face to face with walkers. In time, she found the courage to carry on and became a vital member of the group. Beth was present when the group relocated to the abandoned prison and emerged as a primary caregiver for baby Judith as well as Hershel when his leg was amputated.

The officers were led by Dawn Lerner, a woman who oversaw the operations of the hospital. Beth was kept against her will where she was abused by Dawn's followers. While there, she devised an escape plan with another patient named Noah. He was successful and managed to Beth's old group but she was captured by the officers and held hostage. killing her by accident. Daryl immediately answered back by murdering Dawn.
Maggie arrived at the hospital just as Daryl carried out Beth's lifeless corpse. She was overcome with emotion after realizing her sister was dead just shortly after learning Beth was being kept at the hospital. Beth's death had a major impact on the fellow survivors, particularly Maggie and Daryl. Both became more hardened and closed themselves off emotionally for a bit. Kinney appeared two more times in The Walking Dead season 5 in the form of flashbacks and hallucinations. Even Rick carried Beth's death with him, believing he failed her.
