HBO's Westworld season 3 will premiere in the first half of 2020, and there’s a possibility that seasons 4 and 5 could happen. Inspired by the 1973 Michael Crichton film, Westworld takes place in a futuristic theme park where humans live out their twisted Wild West fantasies in a setting populated by super realistic androids (that sometimes get a little too real). That relatively simple premise sets the stage for what has grown into a multi-layered drama where nothing is ever quite what it seems.
Westworld season 1 introduced viewers to the show’s sci-fi world and its many compelling characters both biological and synthetic, while telling a twisty story made for internet theorizing. The internet actually succeeded too well in figuring out season 1’s mysteries, so showrunners Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy Westworld cast for season 3 include Aaron Paul and Lena Waithe.

In the same interview with The Wrap, Bloys was asked whether Anthony Hopkins’ Dr. Ford will return for season 3, and he naturally refused to reply. Westworld of course pulled a fast one in season 2 by bringing Ford back from the dead after it seemed Hopkins had exited the show. And the Hopkins bluff was not the only twist pulled off by season 2, as the show employed a non-linear story structure to throw theorizing fans off the trail. After the confusion created by season 2, showrunners Nolan and Joy have promised that season 3 will be easier to follow, though that statement could itself just be another bluff.
Thus far, hints about what will actually go down in Westworld season 3 have been tantalizingly vague. After bewildering many fans with season 2, it would arguably be a good idea for season 3 to scale things back plot-wise and focus more on character. Westworld may actually work best when character drama takes the fore and narrative trickery sinks more into the background. Of course, it wouldn’t be Westworld if things didn’t get a little twisty and wild, so fans should probably prepare for at least some confusion when the next season arrives in the first half of 2020.
